I'm sure you've answered this before..
But what are the advantages of welding the cage to the box like sections rather than just using spreader plates?
Not sure what you mean by "welding to the box like sections", but the advantage of welding everything up instead of bolting it, is that it is all much stiffer. Of course the down side is that you can't remove anything!

Do you think its also lighter welding a cage in rather than bolt in??

Just done a little job on the air filter, I had wondered yesterday how I was going to get at the air filter to clean it when it is tucked away miles beyond the bulkhead in a box, and I have a big carbon dash to go inside the car so it was always going to be a bit tricky...
So I decided to modify the filter lid and posts with a couple of slide catches to replace the normal dome nuts, now I can get my hands in either side of the carb (Weber DCOE 45) and undo the lid, and slide the element out beside the carb to clean it. I was originally going to put a removable panel in the end of the bulkhead box (yet to make), but thought I'd end up getting a water leak in the car so decided to make it properly sealed. If I do need to get at it properly it only takes a couple of minutes to unbolt the carb and pull it forwards.

I also made a new steering column outer, as I'm going to retain the straight shaft rather than articulating it which would make the position nicer, but IMO it complicates the set-up and creates more links in the system to go wrong, add weight, and allow for play which reduces feedback.
Lightweight ERW tube, made some delryn/nylon (cant remember what it is!) top hat bushes, to fit the original indicator stalks, and adjustable brackets for height changing. Will weld the larger plate to my dash bar and the smaller one will be welded to the outer tube, then it has 3 positions to suit driver.
(funky spline on end is for my quick release steering wheel, can really recommend this company- is a beautifully made piece of kit http://go-race.co.uk/)
