Got a bit ditracted this weekend with the next project. Wanted to go to Bingley Hall but thought working on the mini was more important right now. Just a hint for the next project.

Woody time???

Still got some time on the saloon. So time for an update. Finally got the welder going again. Still not quite right but will get there.
There has been some obersvations on this thread that this project is only putting heritage panels together. So time for a little fabrication. Remembered to put the seatbelt mount in before the rear quarter. Then some tubbing of the rear arch. I followed the usual line of cutting the arch as it starts to curve down & then adding a strip of metal around that radius to meet the quarter panel. I used the piece I cut off the quarter panel to recreate the wheel arch lip. The top front of of the quarter panel gave me some trouble but a small cut with the grinder & welding back back together worked well. There is some very slight warping of the quarter panel around the arch. But nothing too serious. Just a bit more dressing left to do. Gotta repeat the tubbing on the passenger side next..but quicker.

yep, not happy with just rotten metal, fancied some rotten wood too. Good news is this the mk3 was the warm up. The next project is in far better condition. Will start another project thread when it gets going.

That's it for mini's. I had a mk2 estate as well but that went for scrap a few years ago. In hindsight it could have been saved. But I never had the V5.

Mid-week update. Dressed alot of the wheel arch welds from the weekend. Then welded in the passenger door post closing panel thing.

Weekend update. Finished tidying up the drivers rear quarter. The top edges needed some careful welding & dressing.
Then onto the passenger rear quarter. the spot weld drill was on form so it came off pretty easily. the rear wheel arch wasn't held in by much as half the panels around it had been replaced & the other half had been detached at the beginning of the project. Once the wheel arch had been removed then by my reckoning that is pretty much the last of the rusty panels! The new arch has been tacked in place once I had checked out the best position.
Next week will be fabricating & welding in the second tubbed rear arch

Hello folks, weekend update. Got stuck into the tubbing of the N/S rear arch. Finished fixing the rear pocket & other closing/stiffening panels. Tried to use lessons learnt from the drivers side. So a bit quicker & neater. Got the rear quarter on too. Just needs a few last welds & some tidying up.

Major congratulations. Early on I thought what you were doing was impossible. To go from the wreckage you showed us in October to this is quite incredible. I don't know how you can work so quickly. It takes me hours just to make small repair panels and weld them in. Maybe I should be out in my garage just now instead of reading posts!
And thanks for the updates and the photos. It is so helpful.

Keep up the good work

Hugh

Looking good, like your style with fabbed panels! excellent, much cheaper too.

Hello folks, another weekends update. A few quicker, less visible but neccessary jobs. Getting close to the home straight for the shell now hopefully.
Finished welding up the rear quarter & wheel arch. Followed by an excessive amount of grinding. Then welded in the rear wheel arch to seat squab bracket.

Next, taking some tips from Project Erm. The bonnet gap just on the n/s front corner was a little too large. The rest is ok. So instead of cutting a slice I added some strips to the outer edge. Plug welded into place, then some seams around the outside. Ground back until flat & add another until the gap was a bit better. Only needed a couple of millimetres. Looks a bit better now.Attached File  Bonnet2.JPG   258.68K   122 downloadsAttached File  Bonnet1.JPG   286.38K   109 downloads

Another blatant tip from project Erm is some welding rod added to the door to close up the gap. The doors don't fit badly but without this method I could've climbed into the car without opening the door. It's a slow process but happy so far. Hope the picture is clear enough.
