jagman.2003 you are a fighter. Great to see you face the problems, overcome them and keep going. I am kind of jealous you are near enough to Minispairs to drive to them. Every part I have apart from jubilee clips and tubing has been sent away for. Keep going. Look forward to this being road legal.

Hugh

OK, so brakes are back. A test drive seemed to confirm they worked alot better. But it also confirmed the brake issue finished off the clutch. It hadn't done that many miles but must've had a harder life than I thought. Despite some subtle adjustments it wasn't biting at all. So it had to come out. A quick burn up to Minispares Oldbury (in the new Jag) got me a new clutch plate, orange diaphragm, oil seal & release bearing. There was some oil contamination, which may have explained it's early demise. I got to the point of pulling the flywheel off & heard the happy sound of a loud bang. But instead of the flywheel coming off, one of the puller bolts had pulled the thread out of the flywheel. The flywheel has been a long term fixture. It was lightened & balanced in the late eighties from the biggest fattest old Austin 1300 flywheel ever. But has been very effective until now. So the problem was how to get the flywheel off. So I decided to weld the bolt to the steel section. This worked until the second bolt popped out. This too was welded on. Finally the flywheel came off after a trip to Halfords to get a bigger spanner. I'm sure the old flywheel can be salvaged, but I don't have time to fettle that now. A new lightened flywheel & backplate have been purchased. Another flying trip to Minispares yesterday. I must say very good service there. I can get parts for the Jags on the same counter too!!! I was tempted by the ultra light flywheel but was quite rightly warned off this one for road use. I already have a tall diff & would probably never get off the driveway with anything less than 5000 revs. So I'm in the process of putting it all back together now. Hopefully driving it again this weekend. Also in case you were interested in one of the earlier posts. I have the Jaguar XJS back with fresh MOT. I had a day doing some more work on that & it's starting to come together nicely now. 5.3 litres does go rather well..! :D

You were lucky to get the flywheel off! You definitely got the right bolts? Pretty sure Verto clutches have metric threads...

Nearly there now !

Cheers

A valid point there. They should have been the 3/8" unf (imperial set) as it's a pretty old flywheel (pre-verto). I did check the metric ones & they wouldn't go in more than half a turn. I don't know how many times I have removed it, quite a few over the years. Can only presume the threads had worn or stretched.

Thanks Hugh, it is very disheartening to have issues like this late in the day. But that's life. Too much work done to give up now. Minispares is indeed handy, but still a 2-1/2 round trip. There are some local to me but they will have stock limitations. Certainly not a bad location for suppliers.

Flywheel & clutch fitted, took some fiddling to get it adjusted & work correctly. But a few test drives have proved successful. Actually despite it's basic state of setup it's going very well. Once on song it really wants to go. Looking forward to driving it now & getting it properly setup.

Ok, checked out the push pump washer system last night. Quite pathetic. Hardly enough to dampen the scuttle. All parts new. I will try a non-return valve to see if it's trying to push some washer fluid back into the bottle. Any tips or ideas welcome. For the MOT I might have to do a very quick lash up electric pump. I did prime the system. I must say a very good idea from my trusty mechanics helper of using a water pistol as I couldn't find a funnel small enough. I thought keeping the push pump would keep things simple, but very wrong there.

The non return valve in the washer bottle worked a treat. Washers working very well now. Can even do the rear window if I push hard enough. But moving on to today. It passed the MOT. Tester happy to work on a clean solid mini. Only thing that was close was the rear brake balance between wheels. But something to watch for next time. I took it to the test via some back lanes to avoid traffic. But couldn't resist opening it up on a dual carriage just a little on the way back. Definitely has the grin factor & lots of noise. Straight cut box & Side draught induction with not much insulation. So not much more to write on this thread. I will write a short list of jobs to do to finish it up, some conclusions & some final photos.

Don't worry there will be more on this thread here: http://www.theminifo...b#entry2805789.

It's my next project that has been on the back burner. Hopefully more relaxed & simple build. More standard & original-ish..

Phew, i thought a trip to the Galactic library was on the cards.

I have been watching this since the very start and i think its the best project thread for people to read who get downhearted and need a lift to crack on with their project. My first Mini was like the start of this project and i still drove it. It eventually got taken for Target practice on a military base! Wish i kept it now, it was one of the early 997 coopers.

You never know how life travels!

you have done it, bringing him back from the death, I remember when you started, glad to see you 'finished' it (never is) and now it's road legal to, another Mini going to the IMM next year perhaps? Thank you for the educational journey at times.... ;D

A few hours polishing & cleaning have made it look a bit better. Never actually cleaned it before. Put some trim & a bonnet badge on. Just parked for a couple of days in another garage with some stable mates. Sadly not my garage, just some space I was borrowing for a few days.
