Wow, this is just incredible. Can't wait to see it finished. What a transformation!

Thanks, I'm actually quite excited to get it all bolted back together now.

Thanks, on the last hurdles now. If only I could have completed it in a lunch hour. Yes my girlfriend is very patient & supportive. I have to say that not only because it's true but because she often reads this over my shoulder. Luckily she has her own hobbies too & also likes scooting about in mini's.

Holy carp that looks amazing! You deserve an enormous pat on the back for the speed in which you turned that rusty little shell around!

Congrats!

Weekend update. While I'm waiting for the paint on the shell to harden, the front subframe has been getting the treatment this week. I've drilled all the holes I think it'll need. Then cleaned it up & given a few coats of chassis paint. Fianlly bolted on all I can do right now. New bearings & poly bushes all round. 1.5 degree negative camber lower arms & heavy duty adjustable tie rods. Already started on the rear subframe so hopefully have that done for next weekend.

Thanks, I'm gonna be very happy to get the subframes done as quick as this. I was worried they were going to hold me up.

This is great and just looks superb. Can you give some info about doing the subframes.

1. Wire brushed to bare metal?
2. Rust treated?
3. Acid etched?
4. What is chassis paint?
5. Sprayed on?

Sorry for all the questions, but you're the man with the answers.

Hello Hugh, no problem, questions are easy & free.
1. I soaked the subframe in some degreaser, then jet washed it, then wire brushed on grinder & drill, then washed again. Mostly to bare metal or cleaned up any spots of remaining good paint.
2. Yes, a POR15 primer brushed on. From Frost supplies.
3. No didn't acid etch. The POR15 tin seemed to advise against other treatments.
4. Chassis paint is a thick black paint that stays a little flexible & helps protect against salt & grime. Hammerite is ok but chips easily in comparison. I used Eastwood satin finish from Frost supplies.
5. Yes, sprayed from a can.

The ultimate would have been to media blast it & have it powder coated. But what I've done should still last well at a reduced cost & with the warm sun last weekend, quick.

Cheers.

Hi, great project, looks about 90% new panels!

I used the Eastwood chassis paint on the subframes of my first mini and have had no trouble with it at all. Very toxic stuff though, sticky and can take a while to dry but very highly recommended. I even used it on the fuel tank strap because it remains flexible, you can bend the strap to the shape of the tank after without the paint cracking!

Keep up the good work, i'll be checking up on this regularly.

Thanks for the info. on the chassis paint. It's the first time I've used it. Mine dried quite quick in the warm sun last weekend.
