I've always been an admirer of this project. I thought at first it was way too far gone!! Like minimuk I'm looking forward to seeing it all painted up.

Can I ask about the drip rails? Do you buy it in lengths? What, and how do you cut out to fit them? Mine are pretty ropey in places. It is an awful tricky area to work at so any advice would be appreciated.

Hugh

Hello Hugh, the drip rails come as a strip of angled steel, rounded at the ends. They are a heritage part. They were only fitted to MK3 & prior models. They spot weld on under the guttering. Does your model have them? The section of guttering that was very rusty on mine I was able to replace with an offcut from a full rear quarter. Thanks.

Good luck with the painting and fingers crossed you don't go down the paint reaction nightmare we had with Erm.

Thanks, I've tried to pick up some tips from your project concerning the paint. Glad you've got your paint all sorted now.

I wonder where you have been, look forward to see piccies of nice shiny body/panels, good luck too.

Don't worry I hadn't gone far. Just the updates would have been pretty dull. Just like watching paint dry. But the days of spraying are getting closer. Sods law it looks like it's going to be a bit damp this week. Not so good for the finish.
Would have been so much nicer to pay some else to paint it but just couldn't justify the money after the cost so far. Also I have the space & tools to do it myself. Just gotta work on the skills.

I have just spent half an hour reading this project and I can't praise it enough! This is the reason I've bought a fibreglass car - because I can't weld!!

Absolutely epic. Well done! :w00t:

Thanks, I've gone back to welding because I ran out of things to I could do to my fibre glass car..! lol. (well for now).

you are doing a wicked awesome job man :D can't wait to see it when it has been painted.

Thanks, I've had enough of preparation now myself, just want to see it in paint too! Then start bolting on the shiny bits..

Thanks for your reply. Again it is my technical knowledge of Minis that has let me down. No I don't have drip rails. It is parts of the guttering that is pretty bad. It was hoping it might come in strip repair panels and there was some simple way to repair!!! It never is simple!

This looks absolutely amazing! I think it is fair to say that you're definitely a Mini enthousiast!
Keep up the good work, and a great inspiration for me (and most other Mini owners I think ;D )

Like you say there aren't many easy ways to fix these things. But there are simpler methods. The guttering is part of the side panels. So any full panel should have them if you could get some cheap ones. Or you could cut some from a scrap car. Also depending on how much is rotten you could make small curved pieces up & weld those in. I read about someone making a guttering by building up welds, but that did sound very labourious to me..! One thing I've always had in mind is I can put some guttering trim around if it doesn't look quite right. Good luck Hugh.

Ok, bank holiday weekend update. I built a plastic bubble around the car using sheeting with assistance from my trusty helper. Seals well enough to keep the dust out. Dug out the spraying kit & gave most of the underside a quick coat of primer. Thought it best to start there as my spraying skills are a bit rusty. Hopefully get some more primer on during the week. The plan is to get some stone chip on underneath & primer the rest of the shell by the end of next weekend. Photos later on at lunchtime. Connection very slow.
