Thanks, I'll have some better shots of the finished repair soon. Just the cant rail to repair & the drip rails to re-attach.

just read this entire thread from the start, and my hat goes off to you, it is not something I could do.

absolutely amazing

Thanks, glad people enjoy reading this. Anyone can do this, anyone as daft as me anyway. I'll do something simpler next time.

How did you know it was going to be a MK2 next? I thought I'd kept that a good secret so far..! I'm working my way backwards. The MK1 is postponed until next year now. My imagination for the MK2 got the better of me.

I'll try & put some pics up of the drip rail attachment. I don't think they are going to be a pain. One's prepped ready to weld on. But I'll attach that one before removing the other just in case I need a reference.

Right, weekend update. All the drip rails I look at on my projects have distorted due to rust underneath pushing them out. Unsightly & hard to cure without replacing the rail. So new drivers drip rail welded on. Took a little bit more work than I would have liked. The new rail is straight, but the body line curves at the front & back slightly. So I plug welded it on at the front in a couple of places. Then gently fed the rail round til it was in line. Then fed it round at the back as well. The front part of the guttering to weld to was fresh metal, but the rear was original. I cleaned off all the rust but obviously not well enough. A couple of the welds needed re-doing at a higher setting to get some good penetration. The weld through pimer may not have helped. Still some lessons learnt for the next one.
The cant rail had partially corroded at the front so I cut it off just infront of the b-post to make it easier to work on. I cut out the rot & then reconstructed the form the best I could. Then welded it all back onto the shell. A good days work on fiddly stuff!

fantastic job, my god you have patience, but I can see with a bit time on hand and clear plan, I should be able to do that too. I understand the curve as the B-post sticks out top and bottum, and the cleaning of metal is paramount before any welding, especially with new and old metals mixed, cheers for those pictures.

In case anyone thinks this project has stopped I'd thought I'd put in an update. It's not that exciting at the moment as it really is like watching paint dry. All the welding has been finished. I went for the tank bracket & managed to save the original bracket off the boot floor. I'm now working my way round the car getting it ready for paint. I've bought the paint & materials so ready to paint as soon as the prep is done. Presently seam sealing the underside. Will post more when the paint starts going on.

Right, long overdue update. The body & doors are pretty much done. Two months of sanding & smoothing. Very bored of it now. But that's the price you pay for messing with so many panels. It's like a winter wonderland in the workshop as everything has gone white. Hopefully this weekend will see some primer on or at least set up & ready to go. I'm going to setup a plastic tent in the workshop. I've bought lots of different plastic sheets from b&q, hoping to staple, nail & pin them too the walls etc. One good thing is there won't be much masking. Everything needs paint & the same colour. Might try & incorporate some sort of extraction as last time I did something like this I floated back out the door. But I have got a better mask now. The compressor has started working again which is nice. So time to dust off the spray gun. Pictures soon if it looks good enough!

Good luck with the painting and fingers crossed you don't go down the paint reaction nightmare we had with Erm.

I've always been an admirer of this project. I thought at first it was way too far gone!! Like minimuk I'm looking forward to seeing it all painted up.

Can I ask about the drip rails? Do you buy it in lengths? What, and how do you cut out to fit them? Mine are pretty ropey in places. It is an awful tricky area to work at so any advice would be appreciated.

I have just spent half an hour reading this project and I can't praise it enough! This is the reason I've bought a fibreglass car - because I can't weld!!

Absolutely epic. Well done! :w00t:
