I have an A+ MG Metro engine that only just starts and i'm wondering what sort of starter motor i have in there. Would it be inertia? if so what do i look for to replace?

Thank ye kindly

Going by your avatar picture a H plate Mini should have a pre-engaged starter, same as the MG Metros (unless its a very early MG lump). Pre-engaged starters have the solenoid mounted on top of the starter whereas inertia starters have the solenoid mounted elsewhere, usually on the inner wing or sometimes mounted on the clutch cover.

Does your car have a solenoid? It'll look something like this - http://www.minispare...ty=pb&pid=33370 This is usually positioned in the engine bay on the driver's side inner wing. There will be a thick wire from it to the starter motor. If you have one then it's an inertia starter - http://www.minispare...ty=pb&pid=35961

If the wire to the starter goes straight to the battery then it's pre-engaged strater motor - http://www.minispare...ty=pb&pid=33328

If you're still unsure post up a picture of your engine bay driver's side and we should be able to tell you.

Are you quite sure that it's your starter motor? They're quite expensive to replace so you really should be sure. It would be worth checking all of the connections to the battery, starter motor and solenoid (if you have one) before shelling out. Also check the battery and charging circuit if you can - lots of battery places will do this for free.

It wasn't built with the 1275, it was built with a 998. Will it still be pre engaged?

It's very likley but impossible to tell for sure without looking at it. Does your current starter have the extra smaller cylinder attached (where the wires go) as shown in woodsy438's last picture? This is only found on the pre-engaged ones, inertia ones do not have it.
