Check the depth with your finger nail to se how severe it feels. Clean it up with a bit of wet and dry paper.

I would personally refit the head with a new gasket as see how it goes. What have you got to lose?

In all honesty thats what I would do as well.

Maybe use a cheaper composite gasket as they're a bit thicker and may help take up some of the grooves?

Thanks for the reply and to all who have helped.

There isn't enough for me to get a fingernail in there. The pictures are quite magnified. If I run my nail across the tope I can't say it feels much different that other parts of the block.

Cheers

Do as other's have already suggested, get some wet and dry with a block and rub down the suspected aread and take some fresh pics for us all to view and we can suggest as to whether it really is cracked or if its just carbon deposits

Ditto. For the price of a standard motor factors gasket (about 8 quid?) it's worth a try.

I have in fact had a 998 HG fail on me between cylinders 2/3, weirdly enough, just after i bought the car.

I cleaned it up, put it all back together, torqued it properly, and it ran.

Remember to torque it up again after about 30-50 miles!

Good luck, Paul.

Unfortunately I now have another problem, little embarressing - later perhaps.

I'd like to say comments on a postcards please (like in the good ole days) but I can't wait that long :)

Thanks

Stuart

Id fit a new cheap gasket and see how she goes. No doubt it will run, fine for a while dosent look to bad. But think about geting a cheap 998cc doner just in case the gasket goes again. Composit gasket sounds like a good idea for this one.

Having looked at it now its cleaned up I would say that the block is NOT cracked and you will be good to go again, just give all the block surface a rub down with wet and dry with a block and fit yourself a new gasket.

put enginners blue on the block face and rub down with a flat block, as you rub down the enginners blue will rub off leaving some in the crack if there is one.

Thanks guys, I will be cleaning it up and putting it back together as soon as I find a new head (I'm afraid that did show a crack even I can identify). I'll also search for a composite gasket as I only have a copper one here right now.

In the mean time I'll try to source a new engine to fix up anyway.

What can I say except a big thank you to all. If ever you are in Warwick and fancy a brew .........

If it's only a 998 - then heads are plentiful. The block in some views almost looks like it has been 'filled in' with plastic metal - but it's probably just the angle of the pic. I too would clean it up - use another 998 head (or check yours carefully with a straight edge/get it skimmed - and bang it back on with a new gasket and clamp it down to 50 ft.lbf. Run it up - retorque - and hope for the best. A 'blow' in this area doesn't cause any water leaks - so i'm not understanding that part of your post......

Your are quite right in your observation. When I looked at the gasket it was clear that it had gone between pots 2&3 and explained the coolant etc in those two cylinders. It was only after taking the head to have a stud removed from the thermostat housing that the chap spotted a crack in the head between 1 and 2, so I then went away to check the block and here we are!

I was sure I posted that info this morning but can't find it now - DOH! another senior moment.

If your going to use wet and dry to clean the block, use a piece of MDF as a rubbing block as it will give you a nice level firm surface to hold the paper. If you just concentrate on the area thats worrying you, you,ll more than likely end up rubbing a "hollow" between the cylinders.
