I was speaking to a mate yesterday who is building a Locost kit car and we got talking about windscreen demisters. He says he hasnt fitted a windscreen to get around the need for a demister what is an SVA requirement.

My question is this - do I need to fit the heater / demister in my car in order to pass an MOT as I had originally planned not to fit it in order to save weight on my stripped out track car

A windscreen demister is not part of the MOT test. If you are going to use the car on the road then a demister would be good from a safety point of view, which is presumably why they are an SVA requirement.
