i think the standard speakers a 5 inch, if in doubt get your tape measure out!

is the measurement just the cone or the whole lengh of it?

should be the cone to the outer edge of the rubber usually (although most 12" subs are only 11" when measured like this!)

ARRRRRRRRRRGH! *cries* a friend of mine said that setup wont work? that the subs and amp arent good and the amp for the subs is too powerful and will kill them? Is he just talking *******?

he's talking *******, you can put a 1000watt rms amp on a 50 watt sub and it will only damage it if you give it too much gain.
Underpowering a sub is more likely to damage it, i really wouldn't listen to your mate!
All the amps and speakers i recommend have around the same rms power figure (usually the amp is slightly more).

if you are going with the setup you said earlier, you are using RE and JBL stuff which is very good quality (i've been running JBL for 5 years and they've had a thrashing).

Too much power will only kill speakers if you abuse them...though you can obviously do that with not enough power or the "right" amount of power!
