im not generally afraid of needles, i think i was just caught off-guard, ive never had a filling/brace/any kind of dental procedure other than a check up, could some-one tell me what they actually do so at least i can go back and not be surprised? the inction is "behind the molar/wisom tooth" but is it in the gum or the fleshy inside of the mouth? is it painful?

but after everything the one thing i cant stand is being injected into my gums, my dentist numbs it first but even then i can still feel it, they had to numb me 4 times before they could continue once...
i say try and change your clinic if you can, it might just be a odd dentist...

i had quite a bit of detistry last year and the guy was saying its very difficult to numb the bottom jaw because theres a very small area in the mouth to inject into, the anethetic travels down the route and unless its in that correct area it doesnt travle far enough to numb the intire mouth...i know because he missed that small area 1st time around on 1 side of my mouth and then started going to town with his drill untill i stopped him.
not being a dentist or Dr i would question if a spray anethetic would be powerful enough to carry out a procedure, just doesnt sound as good

the bit thats worrying is when they bring out the pliers to twist then rip the tooth out.

It wasn't the actual pain I'm Afraid off, I'm fine with pain, it was not knowing what the he'll he was doing with a big bloody needle! No warning or nothing! Ive got some painkillers for te weekend and am going back on monday, now I've had time to calm down and I know what to expect I should be fine, until he pulls out his big drill!!! Many I should buy a blindfold an some earmuffs

I used to be needlephobic, they sent me to the hospital for my fillings so they could give me laughing gas before they used the needles.
Tell you what though, when I was needlephobic, if someone had come at me with a needle without even explaining what they were doing, he'd have been needing some dentistry work himself!
I'm no longer needlephobic, I got over it when I had to have a piece of metal removed from my eye with a needle. My girlfriend was with me so I could hardly wince like a little girl.

stop being a *******ing jessy! the injections don't really hurt that much. i had 4 teeth out when i was younger which meant 8 injections, one either side of each tooth.
the bit thats worrying is when they bring out the pliers to twist then rip the tooth out.
Only 4! I had 6 out in one go when I was younger

And funnily enough last week was my first vist to a dentist for 20 years (I hate them) .... 2 fillings, no anesthetic ...
I was actually amazed how much things have progressed in 20 years. The drill was practically silent.

I have to say, thanks for all the reassuring votes of confidence! My toolbox will never be thought of in the same way again, hammers..... Pliers.....!

As a supplier of equipment to the dental trade (amongst others), you'll be surprised just how similar your toolbox does look compared to some dental equipment out there. It's just theirs are made from medical grade stainless. I've actually got a few dental probes etc in my toolbox. Very useful!
As for the "big drill" The "handpieces" as they are known, are actually very small, use tiny burrs rather than drills and are powered by compressed air.
Despite this, I too hate the dentist so have some sympathy.
If there is a problem, try this:
As you are lay in the chair, hold out your arm and grab hold of a suitable pair of spherical objects belonging to said dentist and say, "now we're not going to hurt each other, are we?" !!!
(only works on male dentists so I've heard) LOL
