Cooper 1.3i:
1995:
I need to replace my front screen as the current one has started to "mist" badly at the edges - either by water ingress or de-lamination or both.

I've had dire warnings about using washing-up liquid or silicone lubricant to help get the seal in when fitting the new screen (washing-up liquid = full of salt = it'll rust the scuttle, silicone lube will do untold horrors to future paintwork, etc).

What should I use?!

Thanks in advance for any helpful suggestions!

O

Why not use a car shampoo. These are a detergent such as washing up liquid, but contain no salt.

Don't use it neat, water it down.

i use "personal" lube, makes it easier to get it in the hole, its normally a tight fit, and washes off with water.

In that case, would Vaseline do?!

I've always used a heavy concentrate of car shampoo with water (cheap stuff will do) in a spray bottle. Makes it easy to apply

well you wont have to do if it's not a very tight fit

Vasaline could help repell water? I'm sure I've heard of people putting it under their bumpers to stop them rusting

Well as long as Vaseline's not going to harm the metal or the seal, I'll give it a go.

What the wife's going to think when I come home with an industrial size tub of Vaseline, a length of rubber seal and a happy smile remains to be seen...! ;-)

fitted the windscreen to our convertible yesterday with no lube into a new rubber. No water, no lube, nothing.

use some windscreen sealant, allows it to slide, and then seals it after.

dont use vaseline, as it will degrade the rubber seal over time

+1 on personal lube
+1 on no Vaseline
+1 on sealant between the glass and the rubber so water doesn't wick in at the corners. (I use Dow or Permatex "flowable silicone"... it's made for the job and won't ruin paint like bitumen products).
