Anyone got any thoughts as to how difficult/ or possible it is to move the key ignition from the steering column to the dashboard and create a push start as found on the earlier minis?
My mini is an '85 mayfair. Thanks all,

it wouldnt be hard, but if i were doing this, id leave the ignition barrel on the coloumn, as it also acts as a steering lock, just move the ignition wiring to a rally stlye push button start panel, and a hidden immobiliser switch to kill the circuit to stop would be thieves from simply push button starting your mini and driving away!

You must not alter your car so that it is possible for the ignition to be powered while the steering lock is engaged. This is both extremely dangerous and illegal.

The Construcation and Use regs for your car require that a form of direct, interlocked immobilisation be fitted. The regs for older cars didn't, this is why the (originally optional) steering lock became standard fit in the early '70s. If you remove the steering lock/ignition switch, you must arrange an alternative immobiliser that works within the requirements. There are ways to do this, but the easiest thing to do is leave the ignition lock in place and simply fit an alternative starter button. The button will start the car but the key will still turn it on and off.
