I'm trying to remove my outer CV joint, to replace the CV boot, but it wont seem to come off, it has moved a bit, i can now see the splines, but the inner race of the CV has now revealed what looks like a washer and i cant seem to make any more progress since that. I've been tapping it with a hammer for hours now. Do i need a copper hammer because obviously they have different shock values? Or is there a way of removing that washer?
Thanks for your help,

its not a washer as such you can push them in with a screwdriver, but normally they come off if you hit them with a copper hammer, it wont damage anything if you use one

normally bend the CV to one side and a sharp short whack of a mallet, its off.

Hi,

The inner part of the CV joint is held onto the driveshaft by a strong circular spring and the thick washer is like a "stop" to prevent the joint moving back along the shaft. Once fitted correctly the inner joint part should rest against this thick washer.
If you can now see a gap between the joint and the thick washer you're getting there!
It may take many sharp whacks with a large-ish hammer before it comes off!

Steve.

There is a tiny gap between the inner race and the washer, but i just cant seem to get it any bigger, I am hitting it in the right place arent I? I'm hitting the inner race.

Yes thats correct,

Are you getting a good old swing on the hammer? Sometimes, depending whether the shaft is off the car, it can help by using a hard metal drift so you can concentrate all the hammers energy onto the shoulder of the inner joint.

You could try levering it off with a couple of big screwdrivers either side as well, between the thick washer and the joint!

Steve :)

I'm not really getting too gooder swing on it, i'm a bit constrained by the room in the wheel arch, i'm gonna go out there now and see if I can get a screwdriver in between the washer and the joint. I'll let you know how it goes mate, thanks for your help :).

You are best off removing the drive shaft from the car, holding the shaft in one hand and hammer in the other. A firm sharp hammer hit should move it. Mine took ages to get off. (and we won't go into the castle nut!!!)

Hi Steve,
Just had another good go, the gap is hardly big enough for a finger nail, so that ruled out the screwdriver, I just couldnt seem to get the inner race to go any further, I couldnt get hold of a copper hammer but i did get hold of some various hammers including a nylon one with no luck, so i'm gonna have a sleep on it, have another go tommorow. My plan b is then to find somewhere which sells those stretchy universal boots, then i can put the CV back on and just stretch a universal boot over it. It's driving me nuts now, especially as i watched videos where the cv joint just gets knocked out with a couple of strikes.

How would i go about taking the inner CV off mate? I heard if you have a full sump you'll have oil coming out and making a mess if you try taking the inner CV off.

If you drain the oil and use a couple of big flat heads screw drivers (or pry bars/tyre levers if you've got them) you can put them between the pot joint and the diff casing and release the pot joint from the gearbox. The pot joints are black and have a boot over them - Basically an inner CV joint.

Once thats out you can take the tie or strap off the boot - Thats all that holds the pot joint onto the driveshaft, then the whole shaft can be removed from the car.

I then just put the centre of the driveshaft in a vice and gave it 2 sharp blows with a wooden mallet and the CV joint came straight off. You really do need to get a good swing on them, so with the shaft off the car its much easier.

Theres 2 clips on the inner boot, one is on the inside of it and hold the boot to the shaft. You won't be able to get to that thought.

They'll be another clip or cable tie round the outside of the boot. Once thats off you can take the pot joint off the end of the driveshaft and the shaft will fit out of the hole in the subframe and out of the car.

Mikes idea sounds a good one!
At least with the driveshaft clamped in a vice and plenty of space around you can give it a good whack..good luck!

Steve.
