Hi, if you decide to scrap your car, tough new rules have been implimented by the DVLA so make sure to get it right.
Basically you can not self declare you have scrapped the car anymore like you could do in the past. If you don't take the 'remains of the vehicle' to a licensed Scrap place (ATF)and get it officially 'scrapped' the only alternative is to be burdened with having to declare sorn every year for eternity!! You can tell them that you have sold it to someone but that has implcations if you havent signed over the V5. Sorn rules apply and fines of £80 are payable ekkk! See para below from Gov website

'If you have broken up the vehicle yourself, you must either continue to tax it or tell the DVLA that you are keeping it off the public road. You can do this by making a SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification). You will need to make a SORN every year until you have taken it to an ATF, or told DVLA that you longer have it.'

For more on his bureaucrat development please go to this website

Thank goodness after stripping the good bits I chopped my rusty shell up last year because the local scrappy wasnt interested at the time to collect unless he charged me! :)

yay, this is good news. now people might sell them off for people to restore instead of scrapping them.

Yep it is but if you have a damaged car and want to recoup the cost of the parts?

Yes of course but if its just a rusty old shell left you might have difficulty in getting anyone from an ATF to collect and dispose as they normally only take complete vehicles. People just need to be aware of the rule change to adapt to the law.

Car Mechanics magazine says this is an attempt to make sure all cars are disposed of in an officially approved scrapyard in an enviromentally friendly way under EU rules. If you break up your own car in future you will have to tax or sorn the log book/reg document (even if the car no longer exists!) unless you make efforts to prove you have broken up the car correctly.
ie. more hassle/rules to discourage diy!

Will probably result in more log books for sale on ebay!

Note: The tick box for self declared scrapping on existing old log books/reg documents is also no longer valid to use by owners.

My bro in law just had a mini written off, and we managed buy it back for use as a parts donar.

I just checked dvla website and the car now as a VIC marker against it. when I followed the link for more info it says this.

How a VIC marker is set
Insurers should notify the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) of all cars ‘written off’ within salvage categories A, B or C. This notification will set a ‘VIC marker’ against the DVLA vehicle record. While a VIC marker remains set, DVLA won’t issue a registration certificate V5C, or vehicle licence reminder V11.

The VIC marker will only be removed when the car passes a VIC.

Now reading that it appears if you keep the bits with the VIC marker against the car you won't need to SORN or TAX because they don't send a reminder ??

It says you can tell the DVLA you no longer have it, so what's the problem? A few pictures of the remains of the rusty shell, a couple of the chassis number, a covering letter explaining what has happened to the parts already gone and lastly your intentions for the shell, ie chop it up and take it to the recycling facilities the metal skip at the tip in other words.

I hope this is the case as I have the remains of an MPI on the drive I was going to exactely that with it, I suppose I can get the ATF people to take it away and pay the money, but for me this is just another way of the goverment getting money out of an otherwise law abiding citizion, yet another hoop to jump through and if you forget or don't think it's relevant to you that will £80 please.

Cheers
David

The VIC is intended to stop you using or selling another car that you've cloned as the written off one. I believe you will still have to SORN it as that makes you a fraudster if you put it on the road having claimed it's not.

............................

This sounds like another bureaucratic farce dreamed up by pen pushers who have no experience in the field they are trying to regulate. I can see even more sorned "ghost cars" and a spate of "stolen" MoT failures - some of which will end up as unidentifiable burnt out wrecks in lay-bys: very eco friendly .

I thought of another instance, just supposing you want to make a Mini Trailor and you take the front end to the ATF and they say can't scrap that where's the other half Lol

I broke my Mini up last December. The shell was cut up and put into the metal recycling bin at the local tip.
I now intend to recycle all the parts to other Mini owners. I think this is a much greener way of doing things than crushing the whole car at a government end of life centre, (or whatever its called).

Its sad but circumstances mean that not all Mini restorations can reach a happy ending. Mine was just too many cars and not enough space/money.

On the bright side I've now got a whole car minus the shell from a 1991 Mini Cooper that had only done 43K and owned by me for the last 10 years to pass on.

Looks like I'll be SORNing it forever....

Hi, your s a very good example, you acted in good faith and as you say will end up SORNing for ever under these stupid new rules. Good luck!

I hope that this will be the case but having had dealing with the DVLA on other subjects like this they don't seem to deviate much from there 'crib' sheets, I feel it will need to be verified by the ATF people! Good luck!
