hi liz if the base coat is to dry then your not putting it on wet enough or your not using the right thinners

what is your mixing ratio it should be 2/1 2 parts paint one part thinners where did you get your paint from?

im a spray painter by trade a customer gave me some paint from halfords once i used gun wash thinners to thin it and
it wet on all dry no matter what i did so it could be your thinners the way your mixing it or the way you put it on

i would guess its because your putting it on to dry as regards to rubbing it down 8oo wet and dry should be fine

dont use 320 then 800 as chances are your still have 320 marks in it after rubbing it down try using 500 then 800 wet and dry

best 800 wet and dry is 3m great quality last for ages dont use halfords its crap falls apart as soon as it touches water

if it goes on dry again dont lacquer it let it dry and just 800 wet flat it degrease it off base it up again and see how it goes because its solvent
you can flat it down fine if it was water base paint then it would be a different story

what colour is it?

good luck with it hope this helps any more questions just ask check out mine so far ;-)

Hi Its funny you should say this. When i bought the paint in the shop, the guy there wasnt very helpful. He gave me the paint then the two pack thinnners then a standard thinners. It should have been 2:1:25%. So thats what i mixed. When my friend came after it was all sprayed, he said that the thinners didnt smell like 'pear drops'....i took all the paint to a guy that sprays cars and he said to only use the two pack thinners. ......so i'm going to have to let you know. I'm only going to spray the boot door to a finish,,,,as someone on the site advised.

do you know it what the red coloured scotch pad abrasive grit is?

Hang on...if its 2 pack then there should be a hardener?

So it should be 2 parts paint+1 part hardener+5-10% thinners?

sounds like hes not very helpful at all he should know what hes doing if hes selling it

i painted my underneath of my mini in 2k blue i mixed it 3-1 paint-hardner and as much thinners as i thought was needed to get a nice finish

i painted the out side in imperial blue solvent 2-1 paint-thinners i used the same thinners for solvent base coat and 2k blue

theres no reason that i know of why you cant use the standard thinners either' thinners all do the same job unless they say only use for a certain kind of paint

DON'T use red scotch if you are painting base coat and clear as it will leave scratches in the paint if your painting 2k its fine
but for base coat and clear use grey scotch

If your unhappy with how your basecoat has laid under your clear then let it sit a week then 1200 wet flat it off and grey scotchbrite in the corners areas you cant 1200. Only sand to a even, smooth, matt finish, you dont need to rub through the clear into the base. If you do I would spot prime that area as it could cause your problems when re-painting the car.

Your basecoat should be mixed upto 2:1 and you should only be using 2k thinner. Aim to get your basecoat on slightly wet but not too much, so when it dries it is more satin than total matt.

I find the more thinner you use in your basecoat the flatter it lays but it can make it very transparent making coverage difficult if you thin it too much.

For some reason Ive seen finishes turn milky when standard thinner has been used with 2k. I dont know why this was.

right to start with scorth
red= for use of straight 2k paints
grey=for metalic paints as its not as gritty and wont show the key marks when painted over

as with the bae coat you wont need hardner if its called a base coat its just got to be mixed at 2:1 with standered 2k thinners if you use a base coat then you have to laquare but if you are using a straight 2k paint you dont laquare base coat is still a 2k paint

if the paint goes on dry then try going abit slower with the gun and maybe move abit closer it goes dry because it may be quite warm and the paint is drying before it reachs the pannel but if it does go dry just carry on and then let it dry then give it a nice heavy coat of paint

The paint cant dry before it hits the panel it must be your not putting it on wet enough i paint on 23c every day and never have that problem

if it is still going on dry putting on a wet coat on after wont change any thing it will still stand up in the clear coat (lacquer)

if it does stand up let it dry dont lacquer it flat it and base it again
