thing is, top speed really means nothing in terms of feeling fast does it?

Comming back from the Ring at Easter I managed 163 from my A3 turbo, but froma bout 140 upwards it took forever!

It's how you get there that counts, and in a well built mini, you can get to 100 pretty quickly!

Couldn't agree more about top speed, if you read this thread from the start the first thing I said was top speed is meaningless, rather how you get to 60 or 80 is how a car feels fast in everyday use.

I was just making the point that wind speed can drastically affect the top speed which is why so many people claim that their stage 1 998 will do 110mph. Yes they may have done 110, but turn the car around and it'll probably struggle to 85!

its how about how the car drives, im in the army and i get a lot of stick for driving a mini they say oh my car is better blah blah SO mine is more fun!! she may not fly down the motorway at 100mph but i can sit at 65/70 and still have fun and fly round country lanes with a massive grin.

for me, fast is any newer car with over 300hp. Id like that pushes into your back feeling, but Id like to know just how much power Id need to get it without going vtec or anything insane, or if its a better idea just to vtec it haha!

my veiw for what it matters
a fast 998 mini is 0-60 in 12 secs and tops out just under the 100
a fast 1275 mini is 0-60 in 8 sec's tops out at around 105
respectable fast mini is a 0-60 in around 6 and tops out over 120
any above this is really fast for a mini.

as for everything else is respective

300bhp is meaningless really, mu subaru hs 250, and is good quick car, but a mini with 150 would keep up with it. The differance is you'd have to concentrate in the mini, the Subaruyou can drive with one hand.

its all about powere to weight ratio as well, and torque and power are two very different things.

Speed, power and torque are all well and good, the other thing to keep in mind is that none of them are any good if they can not be sustained, i mean many people can build an engine to get from 0-60 in under 5 secs and go on to 60-100 and then 100-? but to do this takes time and money and the problem with engins built in this way are strong and FAST but tend to lean out high in the rev range thus making them good only for short stints ie drag race. A true fast/powerfull engine is able to hold it top speed for any given time or fuel allowing.

Take a look at a pro drag car, they tend to run big block chevvy engins, twin bank spark generators, supercharges, sometimes NOS, and a hybreed fuel, YES they will hit over 250mph in a 1/4 mile and produce over 1000bhp with something like 950+ ft/lbs of torque, but you put that engine in a road car and take it down the motorway at full throttle and it will GO BANG within 5 miles and cost you about 20,000 to re build. I ask you is it worth it?

I for one would rather take a 1275 run a +0.20 overbore to 1293, stick in a mild - fast road cam, pistons and a stage 2 head and a good exhaust system and see 95ish bhp and have something i can run down the motorway in with reliability, and have the peice of mind i have room for extra rebuild and overbore room for future needs. So the question is, does the top speed matter that much anyway, does the 0-60 matter? could i still have fun on a drag strip with it? YOU BET...........could i have some fun at a track day? YOU BET............ will the car still get me home after.........MOST PROBABLEY........ will i get insurance on it without having to sell a kidney? ...... ummmmm i know so.

I know it was only a question 'How fast is fast' but it still comes down to my first answer, 'What is the fastes you have ever been?, anything more than that then its fast'.

I agree I was thinking about upgrading my 1293 stage 2 with a 1380 or supercharging or something for a good bitt more power but I don't want to loose the fluidity I have by having a crazy revvy engine.

I think what I will do is rebuild the 1293 and upgrade the cam to 276/286 and a better big valve head or maybe go as far as a 7-port

The 7 port will certainley give you the fueling and breathing of a good modern engine and should see a good power hike. Im not sure i could justifey the cost myself when a good head with some work and a nice weber set up will do the same thing, but i guess it all depends on what you want the car for at the end of the day and the look your after.....
