did the new shape beetle get this kind of stick from the classic shape beetle enthusiasts?

I dont think that was quite the same since thats still German and still a VW, however it is my understanding that the camp is divided

At first yes there was an issue with. My mate lived in the US when the beetle came out long before the UK, At shows he would hear the same comments that new mini owners get here. After a short period this died down and were welcomed by the clubs in the states. Any stick for it like the new mini must be a british thing as the rest dont seem to have a problem with it.
Know im not saying that all beetle fans in the US like the beetle but they dont go round shouting abuse and damaging cars unlike a lot of classic mini fans do here in the UK (about 10% of classic owners but 90% are ok as they get on with enjoying their cars and not out to abuse people for what car they drive).
So really there is no comparison between the two makes at all with them its live and let live with minis it die scum and damage to cars.

I don't think anyone here has called BMW owners scum have they? and anyone who damages someone else's car on the basis they don't like the car is a nutter anyway, bit like scum who paint strip an expensive car because havn't got a job.
Beetle situation is different because it is still made by the same company - I still don't understand why people want to "show" standard new cars tho, bit boring really

Volkswagen is now a large group of car companies all taken over by VW. Therefore using your logic.......Audi, Skoda, Seat, Lamborghini, Bentley, and Bugatti (soon also Porsche?) owners must all think there car brands don't really exist anymore either in a true sense, as they are no longer made by the original independent companies and are full of VW parts just badged up to suit different customer brand loyalties. One example of many is the New Audi A1 (which has just been introduced as an upmarket sporting small hatch to compete directly against the New MINI after the failure of the previous Audi A2 small car to sell in any numbers and which was canned after only 5 years on the market 2000-2005), the new Audi A1 is little more than a VW Polo with new sporting bodystyling and trim - do Audi enthusiasts shun it as just another VW, no most are celebrating its launch!

In answer to your second question many of the enthusiast MINI's at shows are 10 years old now, hardly a new car and many are more radically modified than you might think, especially under the bonnet, suspension, brakes, etc, like the classic there are several tuning companies that specialise in supplying performance and modified MINI parts in the UK, Europe and the USA. If you attended MITP at Santa Pod this year there were plenty of well modded MINI's going down the strip during the day!
Anyway 'boring standard' brand new out the showroom classic Mini's were attending shows and entering concours/show & shine right up until production finished in 2000.....can't understand why people did that either!

for all those cars/ brands you mention they still have the same value to the owners as the originals did - eg a lambo is still build fantastic supercars, Skoda a still well built value for money (they were always well engineered even back in the commie days) , bentley is still ultimate luxury etc. a BMW is not a mini - cheap - no!. designed for the masses - no!, radical in design - hardly, practical - not really Getting back my point BMW's arn't mini's and to be honest modded modern cars leave me cold but thats just my opinion

So the New Volkswagen Beetle is cheap like the original 'peoples car' for the masses - no! its more expensive than the equivalent Golf, radical in design like the air cooled rear-engined original - no! sat on a standard Golf engine and fwd platform, practical - no! highly impractical compared to a Golf due to its shape.... my point is New VW Beetles arn't Beetles either based on this judgement and the new Fiat 500 follows the same arguement..............its just based on a fwd Fiat Panda which is much cheaper, more practical and closer to the original 'for the masses' car concept rather than the 500's 'cashing in on the heritage' so often mentioned on here, plus its built in Poland and exported without going anywhere near Italy or employing Italian factory car workers!

Even todays Mk2 MINI has a lot of the original Rover concept and engineering design still in it, has a unique chassis/platform, created a successful new niche in the small car market which 10 years later others are just starting to copy (ie. quality prestige, sporting, fun to drive & own small supermini - Copies so far: Alfa Mito, Audi A1, Citroen DS1, Fiat 500 + more to come), and it is still built in Britain at Oxford (ex-Morris Mini factory) not to mention the over 1.5 million buyers so far from all over the world who bought it and are buying it today as a MINI!

Really how many times to i have to say this , the majority of our members own a classic mini , so dont be suprised at all the negative comments toward BMW , to be honest the conversation is not really moved forward , despite me opening the topic to allow for debate , the term chasing your tail comes to mind , unless the conversation is moved forward i will have no choice but to close this topic

Ok, so lets change tact on this one, from this topic we can see there is still some quite obvious hostility towards the new BMW mini, and sometimes this gets out of hand and is aimed at their owners.

So, from this what can BMW\ BMW mini owners do to attempt to build bridges, obviously they are never going to 100% forgiven, and the new MINI will not be the same as the old one, but there must be an olive branch that can help calm this hostility?

For a start they could park together at shows and not get in the way of the classic minis parking because it ruins the look and them insisting on being included as if their car was exactly the same is part of the problem for me.

The problem with that is you will start to alienate clubs which have both and put on good displays. I'm at Stanford hall at the moment and there some fantastic displays on with both. Separating would be a bad move. If you don't want to look then don't simple as.
