My cars been off the road for a while and isn't a million miles away from being done now. Another week of good weather I hope.

So insurance is easy to sort over the phone, but how do I go about getting it MOT'd and Taxed? Because don't you need an MOT to get Tax?

So I'd have to drive to the MOT with no tax?

Whats the process and what have other done?

Thanks

Get your insurance sorted first, then pre book an MOT with your MOT testing station. You are then insured for the journey to and from the testing station only. One you get your MOT take the MOT certificate, your insurance & the log book to the post office and get your tax. As soon as you have paid your tax and the post office have scanned your log book/V5 the SORN is automatically removed (no forms to fill in or anything).... & that's it ... job done!!.....Simples!!

Its the trip to and from the MOT station without tax i'm worried about though as the route there is along a main road which has had some fancy looking new cameras which people reckon are ANPR cameras...

You ar eentitled ot take the car to the MOT without TAX. so if you do get something through the post about it you can prove that you were on your way to the test centre by providing your mot certificate or the failure sheet.

That is the legal process for getting a SORN car back on the road, you cannot apply for a tax disc/vehicle license without a valid MOT (if the car is over 3 years old) so you cannot make the journey to the MOT station without being untaxed. If you did get picked up by a camera you do have a legal defence so long as you had an MOT appointment pre booked around that time. If you want to avoid such hassles, then choose another route to your MOT station avoiding the cameras, or pick another MOT station with no cameras en route. Your only other alternative is to trailer it there!

I think i need to clarify AVV ITs advice, as its not quite right.

You need to get insurance, and let them know you will be driving the car without tax or MOT to the station, that way they cant get out of a claim, the insurance agreement normally states that the car must have an MOT to be insured, so you will need to tell them.
You can then legally drive your car to a PRE BOOKED MOT, make sure the test station has your name and reg number written down so that if you get pulled over, the police can phone ahead and check, then let u on your way (they might follow you there).

Once you have your MOT, drive the car STRAIGHT HOME! YOU CANNOT DRIVE IT TO THE POST OFFICE!
Walk, or get a lift to the post office, and get tax in the normal way, just mention that its been sorn.
If you cant get a lift, you can get tax online, and the disk should arrive within a few days, you cant drive the car without the tax disk.

Dont worry about the ANPR camera's, they cant give you a ticket because you were legally driving to or from the MOT station.
If they do send u a ticket for it, dont pay the fine, phone them and explain the situation, you may need to provide proof, but there records can probably proove it. (you drive past one camera at 9:00, an mot certificate was issued to your car at 9:45, and you were seen driving back past the camera at 10:00, common sence would kick in.... )

I don't think you can fairly describe my advice as "not quite right" as all you have done is elaborated, nothing I have stated is actually incorrect?

... But quite how you can say "don't worry about the ANPR cameras" in one sentence, then go on to explain how you might need to fight a notice of intended prosecution in the next is beyond me! (i.e they cant give you a ticket, but here's what you will have to do when they do!) As far as I'm concerned having to make phone calls to some small minded, civil service, jobsworth bureaucrat to argue over the technicalities of road traffic law, sounds very much like something you should worry about and therefore avoid the hassle of if at all possible!

Alrite then. I think I can go a back route round to avoid the camera, its just traffic police I was worried about - You know what they're like

There are MOT places closer but I work at halfords so at the halfords autocentre I can get an MOT for £25.

AVV IT, i think what in your description looked wrong to the picky eye ( ) is you suggested getting the tax disc from the post office without going straight home in the car first, and finding other transport to get it.

Mike., you will be fine going to a pre-booked MOT, stop worrying.

You can tax the car online at home as its sorned, depending on how quickly the database updates to state you have an MOT. Sometimes its immediate, other times its up to 24hrs. All you can do is try. If it does work, print off your confirmation of a tax disc and this will cover you to drive the vehicle for 5 days while Royal Mail do the business.

I always carry my MOT and Tax confirmation with the car until the tax disc arrives, as from experience, the police database seems to take a little longer to update for some reason.

Your insurers have to cover you (3rd party only) for using your car legally and as you can legally go for an MoT without roadtax....

How would not displaying a tax disc make you a bigger risk?

You missed out on 2 points which could get him into trouble.
Firstly your advice would have meant he could have been driving without a valid insurance policy.
Second, that bit about the tax disc almost definatly would have got him done for driving without tax.

You know what the government is like, they cant give him a ticket, but they might try!

The biggest problem is, your not actually 'allowed' to go the back route, but it depends how far out the way it is, and which cop stops you. Legally, you cant even stop for fuel!

is that when i said...."You are then insured for the journey to and from the testing station ONLY"

but OK I take your point, maybe I should have elaborated and explained that; as you are insured to and from the testing station ONLY, you should make alternative arrangements to get to the post office! ;D

I see, then you're clearly misreading my advice or drawing your own conclusions from it that are not implied!

a) "get your insurance sorted" means just that!
b) "You are then insured for the journey to and from the testing station ONLY" does not in any way mean that you are then insured to drive to the post office.
c) "choose another route to your MOT station avoiding the cameras" does not mean that I'm suggesting going the back way or taking a longer route just an alternative

...Now this is getting tedious & I'm not playing anymore!! ;D (toys out of the pram moment!!)

OK guys. That's enough now, I'm sure he's got the idea that he's ok to drive to and from the MOT testing station ONLY!

No need to continue this. any more and the posts will be made invisible.
