Hey all, This question probably gets asked a lot but I'm in the market for a new exhaust. But being 17 I can't have one that aids performance due to insurance being a rip off

What I want to know is, what exhaust makes the best sound in terms of loudness and sound quality? I have about 100-150 to spend and it will be fitted to a Austin City 1000 with no CAT.

Also I have no preference over side or centre exit, don't mind either.

Thanks :D

Clearly mine sounds the best...

No really, if you're 17 stick to a standard exhaust and put a flashy chrome bit on the end.

Putting just a louder exhaust on will more than likely be treated as a performance mod by your insurance and more than likely decrease the performance of your engine, but insurance don't care about that, all they see is £££.

You're 17, keep it standard, I did, it was cheaper and just as much fun, besides when the exhaust starts rotting and blowing it sounds like a sports exhaust! till the new one for an MOT...

I personally liked the pop of the standard set-up when I was 17, only now I'm older I can have something with a bit of throat.

If you're looking for louder, single box standard exhaust they sound good and shouldn't raise insurance.

Heard the RC40 is a good exhaust sounds good as well, but it give's slightly improved proformance but most will anyway, if you don't want improved proformance just try the above

i have a stainless steel single box RC40 + maniflow LCB

it's a great exhaust, easy to fit, and has lasted about 12 years so far (although i have had to replace the maniflow manifold)

if you stick with the standard bore tail pipe and twin box it will look no different to a standard exhaust

It is not all about the exhaust to be honest a large bore exhaust will sound great on a well tuned 1380 but pretty hollow on a standard 998.

im 19. at 17 i had another mini wich didnt have 1 standard pannel on it. i claimed it as standard for insurance reasons. after 3 weeks of having it on the road it got written of, by a you no what in a 7 seater. (he reversed into the front of it putting the block almost through the firewall. when it came to my payout i got more for that fact i had mods even though none were claimed. :D big win. if your worrind then change it keep the orignal and if the unexpected happens then you can just change the pipe over/ or remove the modded 1 and say it fell of after the accident and you binned it but it was standard. wink wink. remember though thgis is the doggy way of doing it but if your not worried then go nuts with it. :( good luck and single stright through sound the dogs nackers if you want my opinion ^_^

Im 17 and just recently bought a CAT-back exhaust. I didn't like the old one because it was way too quiet.

If you get an RC40 it will probably increase your power slightly, I decided to go with PlayMini as they have a nice growl when you put your foot down and is not load when just at cruising speed. They are also stainless steel and have a life time guarentee - win  .

I love the sound of the DTM but I heard a DTM on a 998 = loss of power.

Hegnirst I think you have sold me on that DTM, Sounds lovely. And I'm not worried about loss of power as long as it's not too bad.

What will I need other than the rear silencer to fit the exhaust? A new manifold and link pipe? Some links would be great if possible.

single box RC40 wins my vote on sound and performance. :) to fit a large bore exhaust to a standard engine you will need a minispares W/H inlet, an LCB manifold, link pipe and silencer.

Or if your on a budget pick up a magic piupe that minisport sell that bolts onto the standard manifolds and saves fitting a new inlet and LCB :)

Ill get some links for you :)

Won't sound as good as if you had something with a bit more power behind it, having heard a nicely tuned 1380 and a relativly standard 998 with very similar exhausts there is a large difference (also because it will rev higher and quicker)

Also banging the biggest exhaust you can find on a poor old 998 will reduce performance due to lack of back pressure.

At the end of the day each to there own and what not, go with what you want. I would go for a 2" single box maniflow system as they sounds amazing and last a long time.

Also if your after a bit more noise, what kinf of air filter are you using? A cone filter or a stub stack and sock filter will give a bit of induction roar aswell as increase performance.
