Hehe i knew (and many others) thats the stig was ben collins ages ago
It kinda ruined the whole stig character knowing it but there is no doubt in my mind that ben wasnt driving the car in every show and task

But can we all agree ben collins is selfish?...

Absolutely Ben Collins is incredibly selfish, you'd think since he took on the character after the first guy got fired that he went into it knowing the whole point was secrecy and now he's just trying to milk it for some cash. Damon Hill has probably done it, I also think that Eddie Ervine has done it (he always drove a different line to anyone else in F1, usually a line straight to the bar!). I might ask Swifty if he's done it if I see him again this year.

Publicity stunt? So you think they have paid a precision driver to announce he is the Stig when he isn't, paid him to write a book (tricky task for a driver after all! ), published said book, sued him and the publishers to prevent the release of that book and paid for all the costs involved, in order to get publicity for what is already one of the most popular TV shows in the world? Publicity for a character that already has Chritsmas annuals and soap on a rope fashioned in his image? Doesn't sound very feasible does it?

i was told, according to a family friend who works on top gear, that it has been 2 main people (ben collins being one of them)

they also use different people now and again eg when they are in america or black stig (normally a racing driver who knows that track)

I cant remember the name of the other guy whos been the stig, but its another (not very well known) F1/racing driver.







but to be honest, id rather not know! they go to all the trouble to keep it secret so why cant people play along

The other main one was Perry McCarthy, but he was 'killed off' for revealing his identity. Another one was Julian something or other. It is far better when people don't know, the whole point of the thing is to be anonymous. Sadly the media and gossip rags love to dig around the secrets of TV and film and reveal how we do everything. It's the same as 'making of' documentaries really, it shouldn't happen. It's the magician revealing his secrets.

Elmo, no need to take everything so seriously either. The problem with internet forums is you can't see someone's expression or hear their tone of voice, take everything with a lot of salt. There's no excuse for intentionally finding ways around the swear filter. Please edit your above post. I know who drives the mercedes, porsches and jags round as the stig.
there are others that do it for them aswell, as the same driver isnt always avaliable

Allot of the time the car companies just send one of their test drivers with the car.

If anyone remembers the episode where they raced a caterham from the factory to the track, while the trio built a car, and the stig got arrested. They actually used 3 drivers for the stig.
