Evening all.
The clutch bite point is really low on my new engine. Got it installed and started a few days ago, and the clutch wouldn't quite allow it into gear, until it had been 'pumped' a little.
I've tried bleeding it, and no air is coming out, and i've adjusted the large nut at the bottom, as per haynes, and the stop bolt, again as per haynes, and it's still only just going into gear, with the bite point nearly at the bottom of the pedal travel.
The arm seems to move from the moment the pedal is pressed, so i can't understand what's going on.
It is a MED stage 2 clutch, with Gray diaphragm. Pre Verto set up.
Thanks in advance

James

First of all measure the linear movement at the top of the clutch arm with the adjustment set to give no clearance. That movement should be between 0.52" and 0.56". If it is less than that, then either there is air in the system, or the slave or master cylinders have partial failure. At least you then know which side of the top of the arm to start looking.
If you have that amount of movement, then re-set the stop to 0.020" clearance and check the mechanical linkage including the straightness of the arm, the wear in the top and bottom clevis pins and the little ball on the bottom of the arm.
When I had that same problem recently all appeared to be working and the arm was moving, but the linear movement was only 0.32" at the arm top. I measured my other car with pre-Verto and that was 0.52". so I changed the slave for a new 'genuine' one, unscrewed the overthrow stop, and it was perfect and it moved 0.55". Don't forget to re-set the overthrow stop at the centre of the casing on the plunger once it is OK.

Thanks Cooperman, it was a slightly leaky slave cylinder. All fixed now. Comprehensive instructions too!

We often had to 'bend' the arm on the pre-verto clutch - and always used 15 thou on the little stop bolt.
