Ace photos! There's some serious money in those engines!

What class is/was that? Are they really minis anymore?

Similar to the 'Special Saloon' classes of the 1970's the original vehicle silhouette had to be kept but spaceframes, etc were allowed, as described in the class rule books.....some regs might require an A series block in the case of Mini's but for true free-formula classes even engines were anything goes, eg. the innovative Mini-Fords and Mini-Imps of the 1970's.
As said below "these loud and wild machines are all unique and represent a time in motorsport when big budgets, TV coverage and larger than life drivers all combined for a great spectacle."

The fastest mini in the world race has been ran a few times, The ex pete edwards car won it a few times and that is still racing today, current owner is pat ford who last raced it a brands 2 years ago in the all comers mini race which is now sometimes classed as the fastest mini in the world race.
last year bill Richards won it in his metro!!!!

I seem to remember the space frame car winning, it had a massive Ali tub / chassis and a drop on body.. KAD provided the whole car and it was driven by Bill Sollis, but maybe time has fogged my memory?
The 1994 'Fastest Mini' race at Silverstone during the 'Mini 35 Celebration' was a very close race between Peter Baldwin (Jack Knight 16V) v Bill Sollis (KAD 16V) and the KAD Mini just won it in the closing laps I think.
