Both cars look amazing!

Just out of interest, where abouts do you get all your spares from? I can't find a decent supplier!

Sorry guys not been on this bit for a while, I have been skeeting round the Tech sections but didn't check here.

If you want my personal opinion about parts O_O Avoid Rally Design like the plague unless you are after normal well known products. All their fabricated stuff just does not seem to fit, even the rose jointed gear sticks buzz and are too loose a fit, World Cup x members don't fit ETC.

We have been buying parts from the following.

1. Rally and Competition Equipment (RACE) Squires Bros, have been really helpful and the parts have always been good quality.
2. Gartrac - You cant really go wrong, all top quality.
3. Retro Ford - Excellent for Zetec conversion, and very helpful, more aimed at road cars but the stuff is good quality.
4. Burton - Engine parts and general - the rally parts they supply are more fast road and clubman rally- no problems just depends what you are after.

If you dont already have it buy Classic Ford mag for adverts for all of the above.

Time for another update.

Well, almost all of the fabrication is done now, The only welding left to do is the sump guard mounts, which need to be done when the engine is fully built up with the exhaust etc, to make sure it has clearance.

The axle is in place along with the engine and gearbox, and the front suspension is built up, with only the Brake calipers and hoses to fit. The steering column has been re-bushed (what a pain) and fitted in with the Gartrac steering rack and steering joint.

The fuel tank and rear pillar filler tube are now in place and welded, and just need plumbing up and fireproofing.

Posted Image

The Injection throttle bodies are bolted on loosely to work out the plumbing routes for the fuel pipes, we decided to go for -6 threaded fittings after getting a few small fuel leaks on the Blue car due to the 40psi injection pressure with Jubliee clips on plain pipe not really working as they should. The throttle bodies were off a 16v Astra motor so the linkage and air filter will need modifying slightly to suit the Zetec manifold spacing. unfortunately this requires a new fuel rail with the threaded fittings.

Posted Image

Just for a bit of inspiration we put some front wheels on as well, just got to tighten up all the mounts etc now it all fits together and then we can drop it down on the floor, which will make it an awful lot easier to work inside and on the engine bay.

Posted Image

There have been no major problems so far, but as with anything built from scratch most things need a fettle before they fit, Unfortunately the heater needed lots of modifying to fit round the big tunnel, but dad managed to get it all into place and working as best he could. Some of the parts that came with the car when we bought it are not really good enough, and its not worth using them for the sake of it, so we have had to buy another bias pedal box, the one that was with it had fabricated pedals made from thin steel, so we have plumbed for a new one using the original but modified Ford pedals, which are more up to the job.

Next time we need to plumb up the injection and make a start on the wiring, which will be fun.

So aspiration wise which way are you heading, throttle bodies, Webers, Dellorto's???

As you can see on the latest update we have gone for the Jenvey injection throttle bodies. This is mostly because that is what is on the other blue car and I hope to get them both set up properly when this one is finished. luckily we got a good secondhand set which was about half the price of a new set. The ECU will be Emerald again same as the other car.

looking good with those arches on! :P
and that interior fabrication for the diff looks awsome!!

seeing as you have dealt with them for a number of years,
do you know a ballpark figure i could pick a mk1 escort shell up for? i really want an escort to convert to rs1800 spec:)
cheers:P

Mk1 escort shells go from about £2,000 up to £5,000 depending on condition and what sort of spec of modifications.
have a look at this for a build: http://boardroom.wsc...;t=46169;st=375
That build must be up to £40,000, the engine would be £20,000 on its own.

They are not cheap any more unfortunately

Throttle bodies are lovely and so much easier to maintain than side draughts. I had a pair of 45's on my RS2000 and although they were the dogs danglies they needed a lot of looking after.(throttle bodies in the early 90's were rare then)

Burtons were really good to me posting all of my stuff out to Germany while i was still in the RAF. Carbs, single piece prop etc and always very quick plus when you talked to them very knowledgeable and friendly.

Emerald stuff is very good as well, been following what Dave Walker has been doing for some time now.

Great, love them both. ELMO, you might like this.. I fitted the engine and decals, can't lay claim to any more of it! originally an estate, turned into a van.

If a Mk1 Escort van ever comes my way for reasonable money, I would love to do a nice street sleeper with a minilites and a duratec in a light blue. Maybe someday.

Anyway i have been scanning some old photos, Does anyone want to see what I did on my last rally? TR8 + Brick wall = Sulky Kerrin.

Hopefully will get some more done on the Mk1 next week and will update.

Very nice! I do like that. Im not actually that keen on the vans as I dont like the way they look, but this being a converted estate it does look nice! It would be awesome if it had the flared arches! :)

What engine did you fit?

That photo was about 10 years ago and the shell had to be scrapped as the floor and roof were creased. I did rebuild the car into a mint shell, and then found the rover v8 block was cracked from the crash, so totally lost interest and sold the car. Shame really as it was great fun. The crash even made an article in the local paper.

Was up at the folks last night for a few hours.

Jobs done. Sump Guard mounts welded to chassis rails. Hydraulic handbrake pivot welded to lever. Ashley mk1 escort Zetec exhaust manifold extended at the down pipes by 3" (the manifold on the blue one was exactly the same, wont even clear the floor as it arrived)

For some reason the Sierra Cosworth handbrake cable is totally wrong. It looks ok, but nothing fits, I need to go lie under the other car to check whether we got sent the wrong cable, or I messed up the brackets on the floor.

I also managed to fit the injection bodies on properly with the new -6 threaded fuel rail, so it is really starting to take shape, hopefully once the underfloor plumbing is completed we can fit the front brake calipers and get it on its wheels.

The fun jobs are starting to make it a bit nicer to work on. Hopefully that is also the last of the welding,

Next dilemma, wheels and tyres.

Well overdue an update again on this one.

We seem to have got to the end of all the planning and sourceing bits again for this phase of the build. to be honest it has been a bit of a long haul, as usual lots of the stuff needed modifying to fit, and most of the bits we inherited with the shell, are really not good enough.

The bias pedalbox was not very good quality and we were not sure how to make the throttle pedal work as the standard one wouldnt fit and we couldnt fit the GRP4 pedal we had on the blue car, luckily we found a supplier who agreed to modify the standard box and supply the rest of the parts to go with it. So to cut a long story short, despite a few weeping joints the brakes are finished and bled up, and we have a good pedal.

The fuel pipes and pumps in the boot are now bolted in properly, hopefully all that is needed to finish in the boot is the wiring for the pump and revese light.

Posted Image

We have done a fair bit more in the engine bay, the black pipe is the plumbed in fire extinguisher which makes it untidy but rules are rules and safety is paramount, or so they say. Can anyone spot the engine changes?

Posted Image

Another photo of the inside, with the battery box and extinguisher bottle in place, sorry the photo is blurred, battery is inside to protect it and also make the wiring runs simpler and shorter than it going in the boot, as long as it is in a sealed box it is ok there. The fire wall is finished and the pesky rear pillar filler cap is also covered so we can pass the rally scruteneering, and a good job Dad has made of it too.

Posted Image

Yes its also down on the wheels, and all the suspension is pointing in roughly the right direction. There was some silly negative camber on the bottom arms and the track rod ends were too short to track the wheels straight, but with the wheels pulled in to something sensible on the adjusters its all working well and is a bit easier to push about in the garage.

The throttle bodies need a final fettle and once the water plumbing is finished and the initial wiring for the lights etc fitted back in place we can put them back on and finish the plumbing.

We decided to buy a bespoke wiring loom for the engine management and injection, as it was cheaper than paying for (waiting for) my mate the auto electrician to wire it up. I probably could have done it after seeing how the other car was done, and since fitting Megajolt to my mini, but the loom is so well made I think we made the right decision.

Really got to start the wiring in earnest soon, luckily we can use most of the original looms and just add a sub loom system for the engine, injection and hopefully the new switches and clocks on the dash, Secretly I am dreading the dash wiring, but the old dash wiring can be used for most of it and the rest will just fall into place, hopefully.
