I've been thinking of painting my floors, boot and wheel arches with hammerite before repainting the whole car, but i've read that hammerite reacts with other paints is this true??? If so is there anyway around it??

Mine is purple atm, and will be completely redone in yellow lol just don't want anything to react etc, or i'll just have to rethink my rustproofing techiniques

ive done my wheel arches in black hammerite, scraped off the underseal to the nice tidy facory paint underneath and slapped it on, no problems at all. I do know it can react, but from my experiences it comes from overcoating hammerite with other paints

yeah it doesnt react when you paint it over something, but if you spray over the hammerite it will react badly.

Yeah that is right, if you are going to be spraying over it then it will react. Have you thought about using stonechip instead, it helps with rust if cleaned up properly prior to application & you can paint it, it also deadens road noise to a degree. Just to make sure you could clean the areas up, then etch prime & stone chip. Hope this helps.

I read last night that there are some primers that don't react, not sure how true it is and if anyone has had any experience with them?

hey sorry to hijack but ive got a similar question so thought id chuck it one this thread!... basicaly the same but with red oxide primer!

whilst doing the projct red oxide primer has been the first thing to hand to put on bits of bare metal, so now im preping to paint im not sure about whether it will react with other paints.

is it ok to spray primer over it and then spray the top coat over that? or will this end in a horrible reaction?

also where im using filler to tidy up any dents is it ok to put filler ontop of where i have painted red oxide primer?

cheers

ben

filler over paint is fine, i think you will find all bodyshops do that, just DA the surface first.

I find that cellulose paint usually reacts if sprayed over Hammerite. However Wickes do an own-brand paint that's similar to Hammerite and I have used it a few times under cellulose without any reaction.
Just make sure you buy the water-based version (the instructions will tell you to wash the brush with water when finished) as they do two different types.
