That's a shame mate. I've got 4 contacts for welding now, hopefully one of them will be able to help me learn to weld or even do my welding for me. One is a second uncle (or something), two are mate's Dads and one is a friend of a friend (who might even be able to sell me a welder). Once the welding is done I want to find somewhere dry I can keep him while I'm at uni so that I can keep any more at bay for as long as I can.

Today I have some progress to report. My car starts! It turned out to be a simple fix (fuel cut off inertia switch needed resetting). But I was also half way through attempting to remove the fuel filter to replace it with my nice new one so unfortunately I still can't drive him until I finish getting the darned thing off. It just wont budge! Any tips? I am about to order a new pipe and a couple of other bits and bobs that I think I could use so when they turn up, the next job is welding.

On that front, I made contact with the first of my four possible welding contacts today and he is coming round on Saturday just to look the car over. He has welding equipment but its old and not very reliable so I would still need to get my own, but I'm working on that.

Its progress, but not huge progress. But the fact that he starts makes me a very happy man.

Back to square one  He won't start again. I've replaced the fuel filter but I can't hear the fuel pump starting up in the boot when I turn on the ignition so he won't start. He turns over but once again there is no fuel getting to the engine. ;)

first thing, check the fuse for the fuel pump. then all connections on fuel pump, then just all electrical connections possible to cross everything off the list

or easier route is if you have access to diagnostics equipment, plug in and that will pretty much tell you any electric faults you got going on

check if the cut off switch is buggered, join the 2 wires going to the cut off switch , if the pump kicks in then the switch is fubared

Tried shorting out the cut off switch and that didn't work, checked all fuses in the fuse box and they are all fine, there appears to be no power getting to the fuel pump atm. I put my voltmeter across the connections and then put the ignition on and nothing showed up. The car started before I changed the filter, the new filter is on the right way round (arrow pointing towards the engine I assume is the right way) and there are no hose clips left on. I've tried everything suggested and that fuel pump just won't work. Help!

No, where would I source the power? I don't want to put too much power into it incase I knacker it by testing it! Should I take power straight from the battery or not?

i've always used an old bike battery and run power (with a fused wire) to what i needed, works a treat if you don't have a proper probe tester, shouldn't see a problem with using the car battery, just make sure you use one of those inline fuses in the wire just in case

Thanks for the advice, already done it though. Works off the car battery and interestingly it worked the first time I tried this morning but not again. I'm off out to get a new fob battery, I'm hoping the fob isn't turning off the alarm properly as the battery seems to be on the way out and with a new battery hopefully it will sync properly and with the immobilisor off the pump will run.

so the immobiliser isn't turning off? obviously the car won't start then lol rover alarms are a nightmare and always have been, only a few places reprogramme them aswell now, most of the time the fob stops communicating with the alarm ecu and needs to be reprogrammed properly, just never leave your battery disconnected for too long.

Its not definitely the immobilsor but the fob definitely isn't working properly. Where can I go to get this looked at? The new battery made no difference at all. I've wired up the pump through a switch and fuse in the boot and the car runs fine from that, but obviously I want to sort it properly asap. Also, is it expensive to have them reprogrammed?

And the battery has been disconnected for some lengths of time, didn't realise this would cause a problem!

best place i've used in the past is remotekeys.co.uk

have to send your fob/fobs and your security ecu off, security ecu is located behind the dashboard screwed to the bulkhead, about just to right of the glovebox

they usually get your ecu and fobs back to you within 2 days, they can also refurb the fobs at the same time, best bet is to call them and get all the details
