Time for a bit of an update! Since getting Barney back from Sean I've had my hands full dealing with his never ending list of problems. On my way to my sister's wedding the accelerator pedal completely snapped off! Here's a brief overview of stuff I've done:

25/04/16 New Clutch and oil seal (previously fitted incorrectly), new water pump, wheel bearing, brakes adjusted

20/05/16 Fitted another new clutch (!) as first got oil on it. Tightened loose bolt that holds gearbox to engine (probably source of oil leak), replace engine steady, refit air vent pipe, refit radiator cowling, new headlamp switch, minor electrical work (fuel cut-off bypassed as faulty)

03/06/16 Remove and replace starter motor (cause of my previous starting problems), replace heater cable and rocker cover gasket. Remove head steady, remove broken bolt found in engine block, re fit steady with new bushes

29/07/16 Started fitting sound deadening to the front of the car

Current problems:

Idle speed problem: often idles too low causing engine to stall. Went to check vacuum pipes and found yellow one cracking (underside of airbox to upperside) and red one missing (air box to inlet manifold)! Manifold port for red pipe has a screw stuffed into it. Can't imagine that is helping! Will order new pipes and see if the problem improves

Recently the oil pressure light has started to come on at low revs. The longer you drive, the higher the threshold becomes for switching on the light. I have checked oil levels and they have been consistently good. No idea what could be causing this. Any ideas?

Today the car seemed down on power and sounded a bit rough, I assume this is linked to the problems above.

Horn has stopped working. No power getting through to horn, need to chase down the problem.

Finally, here are some pictures

Looking good but would it not have been a good idea to treat the rust on the floors before sticking down the sound deadening?

I'm not picking, i just don't want to see your floors rot out!

The floors are quite good, perhaps a bit of surface rust which in hindsight I probably should have rubbed back and painted over. Sean checked out the floors and sills when he had it a couple of years ago.

But today the gearbox appears to have broken down again. I'll be getting it recovered all the way home (I'm visiting family right now!). Not even that disappointed, I'm so used to constant big issues! Scared how much this will cost...

I never liked that gearbox, remember the issue we had with the engine locking up?  It went away but we never found the cause.

Yeah I remember, the mini garage near me told me it was in a bad shape when they changed the clutch for me too.

Annoyingly, the RAC man came and told me my car was fine and I could make the two hour journey to Oxford so he refused to organize recovery. So I left Newport and got as far as Bristol before a complete breakdown, no drive, horrible sound from the engine apon failure, was very low on power and oil pressure light was constantly on. Pretty sure I've now done more damage to the poor engine :(

RAC are now picking the car up in the morning, lucky I have somewhere to stay in Bristol tonight.

Yup, that doesn't sound good. If you need a hand give me a shout and I'll see what I can do to help.

Thanks Sean. The car is at my local mini garage now, engine is coming out. Big bills coming my way! Going to change the engine loom while the engine's out as mine is so hacked apart. Fingers crossed that I can actually afford the bill...

Off to complain to the RAC now.

The RAC want a 'garage report outlining the fault to your vehicle, how this is attributable to RAC, and an estimate for repairs'. Let's hope they contribute to the repair bill as a dodgy sounding gearbox turned into what initially looks like a completely dead engine. Never heard a car make the noises Barney made Sunday night.

Had a message from the garage:

"Just to let you know the engine is out and has been split...I have had a quick look but am taking somewhere for closer investigation ...the gearbox casing has been damaged, the primary and idler gear badly damaged as well as clutch cover casing ...."

Sounds like the party in my gearbox got a little out of hand!

God it's been so long since this happened and the car is still off the road. I got messed around for months and months with that garage who ended up doing absolutely nothing. Then John (Guessworks) took the engine and gearbox and rebuilt it for me. I then persuaded him to take the whole car and fit the engine back in for me, telling him to take his time as I wasn't in a rush (aka didn't have the money!). Since then it has been in his garage for 3 years! The engine has gone back in but there's an oil leak so it needs to come back out. There's also a fuel leak. I've almost forgotten what Barney looks like! But I think it's time to get him back on the road now. Hopefully John can sort him out, if not I'll look at alternatives. (Sean - fancy taking Barney back to finish fitting the engine and new engine loom?)

Also, I've somehow persuaded my girlfriend that a mini pickup would be a good idea... could be an interesting development!
