Hi,

Am i right in thinking fitting an electronic ignition means i will no longer need points or have to set the timing?
If so .....
Can anyone help me on what is the best electronic ignition to buy for my 998cc mini city?

Thanks!

Electronic means no points, but you will still have to set the timing.

Try and get a dizzy from your local breakers off a metro, make sure its for a 998 tho.

I used pertronix ignitor. Night and day between this and points. My problem was that all the repro point and condensors only lasted 2k miles before the condensor failed and burnt out the points.

I have gone for mappable igniton now and I have a perfect 998 A+ dizzy with no wear, new rotor arm, cap, coil, leads and ignitor fitted i will be ebaying shortly. Cost £95 in total and has done 2k miles.

998 Metros didn't have electronic ignition, the were all points dizzy's. Only 1275 Metro's did.

The electronic ignition from a 1275 will fit, but the advance curve will be different, but from what I've heard it really isn't noticeable. And any disadvantage is offset by what everyone has said above - ie no points/condensors/dwell etc to worry about.

The metro option is by far the cheapest (I pay £10-15 for complete dizzy/coil/wiring from my scrappers every time a Metro comes in). The other options are good too, but more expensive.

I went metro to start with but the amp was dead and they wanted silly money to replace it and mostly they are pretty worn out by now. The advance curve is very wrong for the 998 as well, though you can modify this.

u all lost me here!

Basicly my 998 '87 mini is running like a bag of bolts! I fitted a large bore LCB and twin Maniflow DTM exhaust. I was told not to bother with the Cone Filter thing, but to drill holes in my exising air box, and to get a tube from the front to the air intake to get cold air from the front. Ive dont this, to be honest apart from a bit of noise i cant notice any difference from my standard exhaust setup, except for the lovely tone it now makes!!!

Any who, last few days my car has been Misfiring like a clown! I may as well be tring to drive up a hill in 4th gear, as it feels like i am all the time!

I serviced it 5 months ago, changing all electircal bits apart from coil and condenser. The car was running ok until bout last few days! Im thinking maybe electronic igniton, or reservice the mini again?

Would there be much difference in engine speed etc... from electronic, faster or just basic better running?

Cheers if u bothered to read through that lil essay of mine!!!

lol Add ;-)

All Advise Welcome

you might be running lean because of the increased air flow

You may need a different profile needle, which is why a rolling road tune is always a good idea after bolting things on to your engine, have you tried WinSU to see what it suggests, although I'm not sure if it llists twin DTMs?

And I'm not surprised you haven't noticed a power increase with the DTM, its purely a cosmetic and audible mod.

i can recommend the lumenition systems, i ran the optronic (expensive) system for about 15 years, and it never once let me down, its a truely fit and forget system.
more recently , ive been running the magnatronic system (got it off ebay brand new for £30.), which is the cheaper version, and thats given no problems
and takes minutes to fit.

i got sick of not being able to get decent ignition components that lasted, so went electronic, and have never looked back.
