Is it legal to remove the front number plate and replace it with a stick on 1 on the bonnet?

I don't know the leaglities I am afraid but I always thought that if it was on a reasonably flat vertical surface it was OK provided the plate size and letter heights conformed to the regulations.

I have stick on black background with white letters across the front of my 1969 mini, repeatedly MOT'd no problem and never had any adverse comments from officials of any capacity.

I believe the E-type had stick on plates as factory equipment when first produced??

Can't help you with reflective background but if you want white letters cutting to stick on black fablon I can send them to you for minimal cost - last time I tried to buy any I found it nearly impossible.

Is this something to do with camera's and detection by the Dibble by any chance?

Motorbikes get away with it from the front, why can't we? I had a stick on one on the bonnet of my R5 (before i came to my senses, obviously) but never got stopped. Is there new legislation out?

pre 72 cars (tax exempt that can LEGALLY have black/silver plates on) are aloud to have the plate stuck to the bonnet, after 72 they had to be reflective, and mounted in the correct place, i'm pretty sure thats correct.

From Craigsplates:
Self-adhesive number plates for the bonnet of your car.
These number plates are reflective, and pass BSAU145d reflection tests; the characters are cut to the correct size and font, ie New Charles Wright. The height is 79mm and the spacing is correct as per DVLA requirements. However, these plates are NOT road legal!
Why?
We believe that because these number plates use to be sold in kit form in shops, it meant people could make their own plates. DVLA did not want the consumer making their own plates as the room for error was greater! Pre-September 2001 these plates were always seen as ‘acceptable’. However, since the change in legislation people have become more conscious of putting them on their car.
I have written a full article about this on our forum.

We sell these plates ready made for you, and in three different colours – white (front), yellow, (rear generally for trailer boards and caravans), and black for vintage (pre 1973).
They also come in various options – we do like to give the customer some choice!

White self adhesive plate with black Edge, (standard) £14.00
Yellow self adhesive plate with black edge, (trailer or caravan) £14.00
Yellow self adhesive plate with no edging £14.00
Black plate with white letters (vintage) £16.00
Black plate with silver letters (vintage) £16.00
We also offer any of the above plates without edging cut to any size (to fit your chosen space) £18.00.
To download instructions on how to fit self adhesive plates to your car click here to download in Adobe

To order these plates, please go on to our plate builder, once there just follow the questions asked (remember that a self-adhesive plate is a showplate), and you will end up with the correct plate. I.E. To order a front stick on plate select Car => Show plate => Front plate => self adhesive plate => white/yellow. This will open the correct page in the platemaker.

Also please note : ALL self adhesive plates will be made using the font NEW Charles Wright (post September 2001), if you want the old style font (Charles Wright), then please tick the notes section and state your requirements in there. What's the difference? The old style font is fatter and will fit a TVR Torchplate end to end if you have a full 7 characters without any 1's or I's. New Charles Wright is slimmer to allow for a badge to be put on the plate - the so called Euro Plate!

Craigsplates also do foreign plates like German & French, etc, (sold as showplates for UK)
This is the law on German plates:
http://www.german-nu...-plates.com/law

German License Plates are NOT legal on British registered cars on U.K. roads.
All our plates are sold strictly for show use, and for using off public roads.
You will have seen many cars with German Plates on (The M20 is full of them - but they normally are German Cars), but you take the risk of a £30 fine if stopped by the police, but no points on your license yet!
The above is for UK cars only, please check in your country what is and what is not Legal before ordering.

This is the law for French plates:
http://www.french-nu...-plates.com/law

French license plates are NOT legal on British registered cars on U.K. roads. (Although there is not much difference)
All our French plates are sold strictly for show use, and for using off public roads.
You will have seen many cars with French plates on (The M20 is full of them - but they normally are genuine French cars). By having these plates on your car, you do take the risk of a £30 fine if stopped by the police, but no points on your license yet! (Correct at time of writing)
The above is for UK cars only, please check in your Country what is and what is not legal before ordering.

Important note
In France it is LAW that the plates are fixed to the car using a 5mm Pop Rivet, the French police (gendarmes) might be pointing a revolver through your windows IF they are NOT rivetted to the car with yellow head pop rivets (rear) or white for the front! A customer who lives in France has told as about people that have flouted this little known rule and the gendarmes take this very seriously, so take care!

Many thanks

Your registration plate is a legal document, you can't just choose one you like the look of. A UK registered car must display a UK standard plate. The DVLA state that they do not currently class any stick on plates as legal. It's not because of speed cameras, cameras can see better than you can anyway. It's so everyone can be easily identified when driving, in case they try to leave an accident or something.

You can't have another country's Euro identifier on the end of a UK plate either, as is popular in the VW scene. Several of our members have now had the pleasure of speaking to the German police when found driving through Germany with a D on the end of their British number plate.

Just because something applied in the past doesn't mean it does now. Only certain, specific models of car (including the E-type and certain Lotuses among very few others) are permitted to have a body mounted plate or one that doesn't have to remain vertical. It's certainly not the case that any car that can have a black and white plate can have a stick on or painted on plate. It's a very short list of specific models.

When a member specifically starts a thread to ask what the legal status of something is, can members please not reply with 'I have no idea what the law is but here are my supposisions'. Especially when those supposisions are wrong.

Motorbikes don't have them on the front, only the back.Somebody,in their infinite wisdom, thought they were a danger to the public. Not the bike, the plate,we can have them fitted beside the rear wheel if we want. ;) .

Cheers for the stupid comment, but how do the police detect a bike from the front? Thats all i'm sayin'!!

Bl**dy bikers think they own the road as it is!! It's because a car driver is easier to identify! I had to remove my sunglasses for a border patrol in Europe last year, yet the biker next to me kept his helmet on.

If you want to encourage people onto the forum, try not to be so personal eh?

Over and most definitely out.

Hey,all I'm saying is that bikes dont have number plates on the front, they used to,but some civil servant decided that they were a danger to pedestrians. And the latest thing in custom bike building is to have the plate level with the hub of the rear wheel, stupid I know.

If this is the general attitude toward bikers on here, just let me know and I'll leave.
The two worlds of custom bikes and Mini's have a lot in common and I have a foot in both camps. We spend a lot of time and money on our machines, some of us put a lot of miles in over a year, some of us pot hunt, but we all pay a road tax and get pot holes and sleeping policemen for it.We pay over the top for petrol and insurance and pay VAT on all the bits and pieces we buy.I dont get peeved if I'm passed by Mini's,I sometimes do if I'm passed by bikes doing 100+mph but only because I know we dont bounce too well at that speed.
Thats got my little rant out of the way, dont know if I feel any better though. .

Ok, then time for a chill out guys, lets be nice to each other. This subject has been done to utter death already. A quick look at the DVLA website tells you all you need to know. I think its best to close this.
