Hi all, please help!! whenever i accelerate the engine revs as normal, but when i take my foot off the accelerator the engine continues to rev like mad, and the only way to fix this, is by putting my foot under the pedal, and lifting it back up.
Not only is this a pain, but its getting dangerous, (and highly embaressing !!!) I have looked in the engine, and the throttle cable seems to be ok that end, if i pull it the engine revs and returns to its idle speed as normal.
Is there anything i can do to the accelerator pedal to prevent this happening, as its doing me head in!!
Many thanks guys.

It might just need oiling. Disconnect the throttle cable from the carb and check to make sure that the carb mechanism is moving nicely. Then have a look at the throttle pedal. The cable connects at the top of the pedal arm and is held with a tall cylindrical clip. Pop this clip off and pull the whole cable out from the inside of the car. It could be that it's frayed and the best thing to do is replace it. If all is ok then lube it up, I use engine oil get as much in outer tube as you can, coat the cable and push it back though, making sure that there are no kinks or sharp bends in the cable in the engine bay.
Also check where the cable goes through the bulkhead behind the pedal, might be rubbing there...

Also check on the carb where the cable attaches.
The little arm where the cable connects sometimes bends and causes the split pin to catch on the inlet manifold, just bend it out slightly.
Either that or the throttle return spring that pulls on the accelerator pedal, to return it to a neutral position, may have snapped or fallen off one end.

ha ha that happened to me a few days ago, yeah its quite embarassing, made me look like an idiot boy racer just reving for fun! i just bought some cheap wd40 and sprayed it up the hole where my accelerator pedal was and pumped it a few times... fixed in 30 seconds! love a good quick fix!

If you grab the throttle cable and run your hand along it to from the carb back to the bulkhead on the driver's side, where it enters the cabin, rotate the outer cover of the wire, give the car a drive around the block, if that solves the issue or makes it noticeably better just replace the throttle cable, else you will just put off the issue for another day!
I tried the WD40 - gives it a couple of days / weeks life then eventually the issue will gradually return.
