I came across a book i bought many years ago while sorting out my room a few weeks back

It is a compete guide to building a single seater off road buggy with a small motorbike engine

I got to reading it again, and decided that i'd quite like to give it a go, so i ordered 18m of box section steel and it arrived yesterday

Went to B&Q to get some sheet chipboard to make a building frame template, and today i got the plan of the buggy drawn onto the baseboard, and cut the first 2 bits of box section, which are held in place with the little wooden blocks, so effectively it is a jig.

Tomorrow i will be cutting all the cross members and front kick up section and tack weld it together.

Baseboard with template drawn:

3 lengths of 6.1m 30mm x 30mm x 2.5mm box section

2 chassis rails cut and jigged:

The front of the chassis rails have a slight mitre to give a 15 degree kickup for the front section of the chassis:

Stay tuned..

Yeah it's the "build an off road buggy for under £150"

considering the steel for just the bare frame cost me £100, i don't think its too accurate :dontgetit:

The main reason im doing this build, is to put on my portfolio for my motorsport engineering degree im in the middle of

Will get the frame built, then go on the hunt for a 125cc motorbike as cheap as i can get for the engine, starter, chain + sprocket and brake setup

Yeah im on summer break, obviously it won't be finished before i go back in september, but it's something to do when im bored, just do a little bit at a time

Also gives me something to do when the mini is at a standstill

Im going into my second year in september at Oxford Brookes

Got a lot more done today, cut all the crossmembers for the chassis, and tacked them in, as well as tacking the front kickup section together:

Then tacked the front section to the 15 degree kickup:

Made the Roll hoop up next, and then tacked it to the frame:

Finally finished up by tacking the front supports:

Will hopefully get the rear supports done and tacked in tomorrow

Can I ask where you got that saw/cutter from?

You've got the harder bits to come yet! :/

Is it going to have some form of suspension?

B&Q have it on offer, reduced from £79 to £45 or something, cuts any material pretty much, has carbide tipped blades

The design doesn't include any form of conventional suspension, however it will be running on big fat quad bike wheels and tires, which will give some absorption, and the frame can flex to take some shocks out, the same way a go kart works

My mate wants to build one of these, I reackon a 125cc scooter engine should shoot it along nicely.

Looking good, and looking forward to seeing the end product.
