Hi there,

I am collecting tonight what i have been told is a cooper S engine and subframe.

Before any money exchanges hands the guy has agreed to let me take it away and strip the head to see the condition as he is unsure if it is one or what the internals are like.

My question is, Is there any unuique features or stamps etc i should look for ?

Thanks in advance

Ben

as far as i know, the cooper s engines used tappet chest covers or whaterever they are called. like on the rear of the 998 engines.

didnt all S blocks have the 11 bolt head setup? that would be 1 way to tell. Also check the engine number that should reveal the engine specs if its still there

Depends what S engine we're talking about 60's 970, 1071,1275 or 90' 1275. Assuming early and discounting 970 & 1071's uneless you're very very lucky indeed theres a very good ID flowchart in the early editions of Vizard....

If you're thinking of a 90's S then don't pay over the odds as not much special in there...

Get the engine number and type the details into here.

http://www.guess-wor...ical/engine.htm

This will give you all the specs for that particular engine.

The number is stamped on a plate fixed to the block, just bellow the spark plug nearest the fan.

I hope it is a cooper s engine for you, that would be most excellent dude.

A genuine Cooper S engine will have cam follower covers - and 10 head studs - and one head bolt!

Well . . .

Got there and straight away noticed there was no tag on the engine but after some diging around in piles of bits i found the cars original grille or so im told.

Which happend to be a Clubman GT grille therfore I presume its a 1275cc engine i counted only 7 head bolts but i might be wrong as i said i am new to the mini way of thinking.

Anyway not all bad got the gear linkage and most of the ancilaries plus a mint front subframe.

Striping the head the weekend and to my suprise it still turned over by hand !

Il take a photo later on an put it up if i can tonight.

Thanks for all your help guys

( I am used to honda's )

There are 4 under the rocker cover. Sounds like it's an earlier 1275GT, if you're very lucky it will have the mk3 S crank.

tappet chest covers are on the back of the block. they are just below the head and and are 2 rectangular plates with gaskets that bolt on with a single bolt.

heres one with an oil trap on it. the other will just be flat.

Hmmm cant remember from last night about the tapets but will check soon.

Once thing my mate mentioned was it has 2 odd parts on the Diff.

after looking online today i have found out they are 'Hardy splicer output flanges' try saying that whe your drunk!

I noticed that they only came on MK3 coopers and auto's as an optional extrax ! its defo not an auto so hopefully it is a Mk3 cooper engine and has the better crank. Cant wait to pop the top off and have a rumage. See what lurks beneath.

Thanks again guys keep you posted

If its an S block it will only have 4 core plugs on the block, 3 on the front and one on the clutch end of the engine, these will also be larger in size than 1275/998 blocks, usually around about the 43mm mark compared to 33.5mm on the others.
