Just fitted 1275 engine and a HIF44 carb, along with electronic ignition.

When i turn her over she wont start, have checked for a spark and that appears ok, have fuel and air but she wont go,
it backfires through the breather on the carb, doesn't even try to fire,

Anyone with any ideas, need to get her going or the misses will string me up

Yup! try plug lead order, sounds like they're in the wrong order, if its still not firing try chucking some fuel down the carb throat, if it fires you know it needs more fuel! if it doesn't it's time to check the timing!
Remember No. 1 is at the radiator, and the firing order is 1342 and the dizzy goes Anti Clockwise!

I had the same thing and mine was the firing order as liirge says.

When you do get her runnung its a good idea to mark your leads in the correct order.

If your leads are on correct then your obviously not getting enough fuel, try richening it up first, float height second, fuel supply from pump last.

Or like i said, some fuel down the carb throat to confirm the problem...

checked the firing order and thats correct,

Have taken the air filter off and sprayed easy start down the carb as i thought it may be fuel but it still wont fire and doesn't even sound like it is going too, removed the plugs and they are wet with fuel so there is fuel getting in the cylinder

Sounds like you have no spark then, have you taken a plug out and placed it on the engine securely, and turned the engine over, and checked to see if the plug is actually sparking?

make sure your dissy is not 180 deg out, you may not be firing on the compression stroke,
you could move all your leads round 2 spaces and try again as it is trying to fire.

i have got it to start twice but it goes like a bag of spanners and when i took out the plugs afterwards 1 and 4 were sooty and 2 and 3 were clean as a whistle so i will try to move the plug leads as i know i had them in the normal clockwise direction EVERY other car o the planet has but NOT the mini of course :)

yeah tried that, looks like a good blue spark, thats whats confusing me, i know the dizzy is on the correct way (with the advance vac pipe up) but still nothing, have set the engine to tdc on no 1 and set the timing to this too. i am wondering if the carb is any good now (maybe flooding the plugs) but i have clamped off the fuel feed to the pump and sprayed easy start down the carb and still no go. got to be something stupid i think?
