well i painted my moms mini today with rustoleum, started using a gloss roller and it looked terrible, loads or of bubbles in it, id thinned the rustoleum down with the required ammount of thinners, and wasnt happy with the first coat (applied thinnly as recommended) so i got out my 25litre compressor and gave it a go with that, soooo much better! but the colour is attracting insects!!! nightmare! hopefully they will polish out once the paint has hardened, there are a few runs and some orange peel, but if i ever paint a car in rustoleum again, i know from the start to use my compressor!!! got a nice shine on it from the gun!

ill stick some pictures up later of the rollered areas, and of the sprayed areas!

If you're using a gun, why not use proper car paint :S

sounds like your either going over bits that already have paint on and picking up half dried paint, or you havnt saturated the roller, or your using the wrong roller.

I think it's primarily a cost thing Pete. I know that's what it is for me.

But celly is only about £29 a litre.. I don't actually know how much Rustoleum is, but I'd pay extra to have proper paint on my car that wasn't going to ruin any future attempts at doing it properly, I've never tried painting over it but I dread what kind of chemical reaction/incompatibility problems there would be. I know people are happy using it, and I always have a little rant when I can ;) I just think it's kerazy.

it is a cost thing, i cant afford all the supplies of thinners, primer, paint etc, i could afford 50quid, n thats what im getting lol a 50quid paint job, but for what it cost, the bits that i did with the gun came out better with this paint, than it did when i used celly on my old mini! so when its fully hardened, im gonna wet flat the roller'd bits, and the rest of the body, and give it another coat to smooth it all out and make it look good, then the re-fit can begin! n while the paint is hardening on the mini, i can get on and weld in the new panels on my estate! (im gonna get that one resprayed properly, savin up as we speak)

as for not using the right rollr, i used the foam gloss roller, not the fluffy emulsion roller, and it just didnt go on right, i thinned the paint down to required mixture, saturated the roller completely, and when i rolled it, it just bubbled and looked a right mess, so gonna stick to spraying it from now on, frequires alot less cutting back i know that for sure!!! lol

here are the pictures of the rustoleum paint job (done with a cheap compressor and even cheaper spray gun!) as you can see, in the places that were sprayed, its a much better finish, whereas where it was rolled, the finish is very bumpy...so will flat all the body back and give it another coat in a few weeks time

yeah lol im hardcore! painted my last mini with celly on the side of the road! turned out pretty well i think! the neighbours dont care much, i think i got more overspray on me than anywhere else! ;) still need to flat it a little, then another coat to finish it off, but i do recommend spraying rustoleum, if your not confident to use celly or 2pack, rustoleum is good to have a practice with! (or if cost is a factor, its a poormans spray job!)

n yeah matt, i didnt take the lights off, turned out pretty well considering the conditions (no garage, no makeshift spraybooth etc etc) my moms happy with it too, ill paint yours next! lol

Just wanted to say the paintjob looks great when you consider you painted it outside with a small compressor using cheap enamel

You cant argue that Paint Jobs that come out of proper Bodyshops are generally better though it does work both way ive seen Diy jobs that are better than some So Called "proffesional" resprays >_<

Ive always wanted to "coach Paint " a car ill get around to doing it one day,i think these rustoleum paint jobs are good but id be more inclined to use real Coach Enamel ;)

Rustoleum,Smoothrite etc was originally intended for Painting Gates,Railings etc but lots have found another use for it paint cars for a resonable Amount :)

Coach Paint or even Boat paint either Linseed or Alkyd based was made for refinishing Cars,Boats etc so will always give a better finish that the rust preventitive rustoleum/hammerite paints but dont necessarily cost much more :)

Enamel paints are a hell of a lot cheaper than Celulose or 2k paints and are generally easier to buy and dont smell as much so you wont have neighbours complaining ;)

I think if you can afford it get a bodyshop to spray your Mini but theres a lot of us cannot afford to pay bodyshop prices and lets face it is it worth paying £1500-£2000 to spray a Mini Worth £1000

Mini and the Mini Scene can be a Money Pit,i say can because they dont have to.

Ive seen Hand Painted Minis at Shows and some people put their noses up at them :(

I say good on them at least theyve had a go :)

Weve sold our mini now and i doubt we will ever have one again,i still come here because i love to see the projects but im edging towards the German Car Scene now as i can buy a car for under £500 thats easy to work on,bulletproof, reliable that can have a few Aerosol touch ups and enjoy it :)

as Opposed to paying twice as much for a rusty old heap that needs thousands spending on it

Cracking job Olds kool Lews

Why not do it cheap and enjoy the Mini Scene on a Shoestring Budget i know i wish i had done :P

Looks just as good as my roof we did in 2 pack in my garage, even we got flys in that.

You have done a good job >_<

Altho would have made sence to mask it all up with some news paper or something.

thanks for the comments! i think if i ever spray a car again, ill use rustoleum, its a good paint! gonna give it another coat in a few weeks after i have flatted it back, so it has plenty of paint to polish up, but the finish straight from the gun is pretty sweet! considering i used very cheap spray gun and cheap compressor, on my front garden with no protection or makeshift spray booth!! :) well happy with it!

n matt, if you get the paint, ill spray yours if you like? i feel a beer night comin up! >_< lol
