hi, i have done a quicksearch and didnt come up with much so...

i have a selection of non genuine panels and a few genuine to prepare for my mini. i understand on the pattern parts the e-coat needs to be removed but on genuine it can be painted over, does this sound right?

i am planning on stripping the pattern panels to bare metal (mainly on any welded edges and/or any inaccessible bits when the panel is on the car) but want to know if my proposed method is suitable or not..

strip with nitromors
clean off
key surface (what grit? 320?)
light coat of etch all over
prime
topcoat

does this seem about right?

any tips or advice?

never heard of having to remove the e-coat from non genuine panels. Just key the surface and prime and paint, been doing this for years and never had any problems.

The E coating on Heritage panels is good so no worries there.

The front panel i have just fitted came from Magnum and the E coating was rubbish. In places it was already flaking off so its been stripped back to bare metal etch primed and primed.

A lot of people on the forum have also stated in the past that if its a dull matt grey then remove it and etch prime and prime.
Its your choice i for one am not taking the chance so if its non Heritage it comes off.

I used genuine panels on mine and rubbed the whole car back to bare metal because I also heard the E coat needs to come off. Are we saying I spent days of rubbing for nothing!! Oh my god Im going to shoot myself, Or maybe a just drink some beer and try to forget!!! Please say it isnt true.

I used a lecky drill with a paint remover disk in. Some bits I had to do by hand because it was to tight to get the drill in. Wet and dry.

I've never had any problems with not removing the electro-coat. Of course, you must rub down thoroughy before priming. Then the primer will adhere OK and the top coats will be no problem.

I used a 4 1/2 angle grinder with a wire cup brush, right angle air grinder with various attachments and some very coarse grit wet and dry in the difficult to get corners. Obviously if its something like a door skin or any flattish panels then the angle grinder with wire cup is fine.
Its a bit messy but it does the job fine. I then go over it with some fine wet and dry to remove any imperfections i may have missed.

Then its on with the primers and paints if required before fitting.

sonnik44, thanks for the reply, i had a go with a paint remover attatchment from halfords on the grinder but only got a couple of small panels done before it was done for.

i also used some nitromors and i actually had good results with it so i think thats the way for me.

heres a picture to show why i beleive in removing the e-coat on pattern parts...

On pattern panels the "E-coat" usually comes off with celly thinners, I clean it all off and then etch prime(unless filling is required in which this should be applied to bare metal)

Heritage panels have a much better quality of coating.
