just got a nikki carb on ebay for what i think is a good price.

does anybody have one fitted to thier car? namely 1275's as thats what i have.

just wanting to know a bit more about them as ive never had anything to do with them


i think i should stop going on ebay, i bought a couple of downdraft webers not so long back that need work (for £10) and i havnt done anything with them

do a search on google. I asked my dad about these and he said they were good. 2 chokes,, 1 works when your pottering about then another comes in when you boot it! He said they're like webbers, but made in japan?
This is the kind of mod ill be looking for next

I remember them from the 1970's but they were never as popular as the sidedraft weber on Mini's even though much cheaper I think because being a downdraft carb there were often bonnet clearance issues especially if you wanted to run with decent air filters on a road car.

Can't be any taller than a throttle body on an injection mini, surely? Maybe an induction kit for the injection mini could be modded to fit the carb?

what sort of thing you talking for an induction kit?

i was going htinking along the lines of a pancake filter but from twin carbs, mod it to have just the one hole in the back, and hey presto. but i dont mind raising the bonnet at the back. depending which way it sits i can keep an eye on the fuel level in there lol

oh yeah, they are a japanese version of a downdraft weber basically. except harder to come by and look loads nicer

Thought it might be a bit easier to mod as it's already meant to go on top instead of at the side (might be able to do it with a normal filter though).

Depending on the inlet diameter of the filter you might not have to mod these types of filter at all.

Yeh that could work too. Was just thinking it might be easier to use an existing filter. Either way it should look good. Are you planning on using a K & N cone or one of the normal foam types?

well i received it the other day and its in really good nick. only found a bit more information about them and i love the idea of the second choke being on a weight so the increased airflow opens it up automatically

got some pictures too, i took the nuts off to separate from the manifold but it was well stuck. obviously been on the a long time





tempted to just get a filter then chuck it on there and see what happens. tempted with a sock filter for it, ill have to find one at a decent price

These carbs were a nightmare back in the 70,s early 80,s, , from memeory they had some kind of diaphram that would split /perish, causing all kind of running problems,

i may be wrong but i don't know whre you would get spares from today if this carb has the same problems,

the bottom line was that they were a very poor alternative to the weber twin chokes of the same era .

Thats what I remember at the time too, most people refitted their SU's or paid the extra for a weber.................probably why they are rarely seen on Mini's today.

think everyone has there own opinions on certain tuning parts, but i have it on good authority that this is a good alternative to the weber, if not better due the chokes coming in seperate rather than together like the weber. Also told they are easier to set up. Guess we will see when its fitted. As i wasnt born when these were about i cant really have my own opinion yet, but the person i spoke to has over 45 years experience of tuning mini's.

thought id dig this up. a few people i have spoken to have considered this as a poor alternative to a weber. this isnt the case, it was originally brought out as an economy carb with the extra power. it can be considered as an alternative, but not everybody who wants power wants to give up fuel economy. id have it if i was only as good as an su, because it is a fairly rare, period tuning accessory.

anyhow, a bit of an update on this. my crank started to go yesterday so while its laid up for a couple of days when i get a new engine, i figured id fit this and see if it worked.

after a bit of fiddling it does actually work, i only had the choke cable connected and just manually did the throttle. i just need to set the mixture on it now but it was about to rain so i figured id come in and get searching for info on google.

it really had beefed up the sound of the engine, sounds more ferocious than the dcoe 45 my sister put on her mini yesterday. but mine was idling very high to get it to run with the lean mixture. and that was just on one choke, the second choke comes in at rather high revs. probably higher than i will want, but first thing is to get it running. looks amazing to watch the fuel spraying in, and when the second one came on it seemed like it had a turbo or something.

anyway, im well chuffed. more of an update tomorrow if i dont get rained off.
