I took the head back to the workshop today and they are going to sort it. Meanwhile ive whiped the engine out and striped it all down. The pistons came up ok after a good clean.

Here are a couple of pics of the middle rings.

I have refitted them to the pistons with the step towards the bottom. So basicly they are the wrong way up in the pictures.

I have used this stuff on all the bearing shells.

And down the bores, Its messy stuff but im told its just about the best thing you can do to help the engine run in.

Will try and get the engine back in tomorrow.

From what I know, you shouldn't use Engine lube etc in the bores as it gives the rings problems bedding in?

I read the guff that came in the packet and it says it helps the runing in by coating the bores with some fancy silicone stuff which prolongs the ring life. I dont know enough about it to be able to comment, But will remove it if enough people think its the wrong thing to do.

It is one of those things you will get many conflicting stories about and you'll need to make up your own mind.

Personally I don't lubricate the bores and rings with anything more than cheap 20/50 mineral oil (whatever I plan to use to run the engine with initially) as the lack of any special additives etc give the engine chance to effectively 'machine' the rings and the bores to match each other. I also don't sign up to the careful low rev running in procedures as an engine that is worked (not laboured though) will get good compression pressure behind the rings to force them into the bore walls and help that matching process without the bores glazing.

as said above if it was me would use same oil that you are going to run the engine in with which should be mineral oil

Well the engine is still in bits. I thought I had a spare gasket set in the garage but I cant find it so have ordered some more from Mini Spares. Spoke to the workshop today. They couldnt find any visible faults and will vacuume test the head to see where the oil is getting in. Its not easy though as the head wont be at working temp. They will re-sleeve the push rod tubes if they see any leaks.. They say it will be fine and not to worry, They can fix it!!!1

Its home... WOOO!! They have re-sleeved two of the push rod holes. The vacuume test showed a slight leak!! And they also replaced all the inlet valve guides and fitted the new stem seals on all eight valves. All cleaned and re-tested, no more leaks. The new gasket sets came today so ive been in the garage all evening rebuilding the engine. Just the flywheel to fit and then it can go back in "Haggis"

Here's the strange thing though!!! They say there were never any welds over the original sleeves..... Now I know im geting on a bit, but i could have sworn they said the sleeves had been welded. After lots of replys on here and in the techy section im starting to wonder if I dreamt the whole welding thing.

Is it possible that ive gone Minimad??? The wife says it happened years ago. Any way the engine should be back in and running by the weekend.

I will post a vidio of the start up, Heres hoping its all fixed.

Thats me just back in from the garage, the engine is back in "Haggis", Ive just got the starter motor, carb, manifold, lcb, radiator, dizzy and oil cooler to fit and with any luck it will fire up. I will get a video posted of the start up. Really hope its going to be ok!! I just cant face having to strip it down again.

Its all done, I started it up and did the timing with the strobe, Needs the carb done and the tappets set, but its runing, and no smoke. I took it for a scud this morning and its not far off, I reckon with the carb sorted and the tappets adjusted to 14thou its going to be spot on. Its a bit wet in Inverness today so its a bit slippy out there. Comes on cam at 2600revs. Im not allowing it to rev beyond 4k and am only useing about 1/4 throtle for acceleration. It is turning heads, took it through the town and people were literally stopping to look and listen, The sound is awsome. Very lumpy below 2500revs and then a sweet spot before all hell breaks loose at 2750. Very tempted to let it go, But Im going to have to be good for a week or so untill its done a few hundred miles.
Oil presure at tick over. (1200rpm)

The tick over is quite high untill it loosens up a bit, I will set it to about 1000revs once its run in. I have a vidio of it runing but my broadband is very slow today for some reason so it wont upload to photobucket. will try again later when all the porn junkies have logged off.

Look at what ive been up to.......
Shagged gearbox case after only 100 or so miles.

Spare case at the ready. Another engine out job!!! Going to transfer the wide ratio gubbins into the spare case tomorrow.

Im getting pretty quick at taking the engine out now. Lots of practice over the last month or so. Trying to keep a smile on my face. But its getting more and more difficult every time i have to take this SODDING BLOODY engine to bits.....Calm thoughts......uuummm....uuummm....ummm. F*ctk it wheres my big hammer.....
