Sorry Dilligaf...you are quite right...its a new clutch plate, but the flywheel and back plate things are original. Am I supposed to replace the thing with the Fingers at the same time as the plate? Ive only ever replaced the actual clutch plate before, but I may have been getting it wrong all this time.

Well thats this engine ready to drop into "Haggis" The other 1380 engine has had a glaze bust and will be getting the full build treatment as soon as I finish the other gearbox. I have remembered which bits go in which gearbox so its full steam ahead for the next few days...Pics of the other 1380 will follow shortly...Its the quicker of the two engines, or at least its higher speced anyway..and will be going in the clubman "Tatties"...

I got a parts washer for Xmas so ive been busy making everything shiny...have built up the other gearbox but its really tight. I have heard that some of the new baulk rings you get these days are locking onto the gears and not allowing things to turn freely. I will contact Guessworks for advice...I hope I dont have to strip it all down again..Ive kept the old baulk rings just in case..

Well I stripped the other gearbox and sure enough the new baulk rings were causing the whole thing to tighten up...I stuck two of the best used ones I could find from other old boxes and rebuilt it...Its perfect now...so thats the proof!! new baulk rings are not great. The gearbox is now fitted back on the engine and ready for the timing gear...
This is the higher spec 1380 im building now...here it is before I popped the pistons in..Center main with the correct tensile strength bolts..And straight cut bits..

You didn't fancy running the box with the new rings in and making them wear into running clearances in the first mile?

I didnt want to take any chances with it locking up and shearing the lugs of a baulk ring..I suppose it woud have been fine really. but Guessworks suggested useing one of the old rings from another box...(In another thread). and there was nothing wrong with the old ones any way so just bunged a couple in on third and fourth..

Hahaha yer!!!
One of those things, depends on how ballsy you feel on the build day! haha

I've got a slightly tight one in my gearbox...I've left it - so we'll see!

Hi Andy,
I have followed your excellent thread with great interest for a while. Now, that my differential broke, it gives me some inspiration to do the work myself.
Keep up the good work.

Cheers Ivan..Ive been away from home since Xmas...Working and living on the Isle of Skye, so have not had much time for working on the Minis recently. but hopefully in a month or so I will be back home and can get the cars back on the road, Im negotiating some workshop space at the moment at my mates premises. Its a huge space big enough for 7 or 8 cars, So with any luck I will have a nice warm place to work on and store my toys.

I love your avatar picture...Ive stood next to that building on many occasions...Its big..very very big.

Cheers Andy,
Well, I started taking stuff off my engine to remove it. I am going really slowly since it has air con and there are no manuals on how to remove that. I have just finished removing all the air con components in the way. What I got left is the standard stuff now. Hopefully, i will get it out sometime this week.
I "lived" in that building for several years. It had no windows, so it was weird, you could not tell day from night. We had constant evacuation drills and it would take forever to get out through the labirinth of stairs.
They finally got all of us and our offices relocated out of the buildind since if one of the Shuttle solid rocket motors accidentally went off, you only had about 6 seconds to get out of the building. So all those drills for nothing! lol
These days, since I retired, they only let me in as far as the parking lot only!

Ivan

This is how I lock the flywheel..

Posted Image

Used this technique today after reading your entire post and its so much easier! ive always used the end of a big tyre lever in the teeth but trying to hold it and tighten the flywheel nut to 156nm is a nightmare.

Very impressed with your determination and how many engines and gearbox's u have built. Ive had my 1380 apart 3 times and building up another engine now so been through the processes afew times and you do get much quicker after afew goes.

That clubman is mint!

Ive been away for a while working, so have not had much time for the mini's. but good news..

Thats the higher spec engine ready to fit into Tatties...So ive got two fully built engines waiting to go in now...Ill get round to fitting them soon...Honest...but meanwhile I have been busy trying to get a deal done on a new home/workshop for the cars..and great news, Ive managed to secure this place...

Its clean and dry with plenty of room...A bonus is that its always nice and warm inside due to the premises above having under floor heating..So the cars will be stored with out the risk of rust..superb..

It also has pleanty of workshop space available and all I need to do is sort the electricals out for sockets and extra lighting...

Im delighted..the minis move in mid March.
