I bought some Mk 2 rear light lenses thinking they would be a direct replacement.....WRONG! they are a totally different size. Oh well! looks like more E-bay shopping required.

The 4.2 final drive has made a huge difference to the acceleration. But "Haggis" prevailed in the drag to 60.
The buggy has had it at 69mph when runing the 12 inch wheels and 75 on the 15's. But its such a drift machine. 1275 tuned cooper engine. 78bhp at the back wheels in a buggy that is only 525kg's.
But Haggis is just soooo much quicker once it gets into its stride, Easily putting the buggy in its place.....(2nd) ha ha...Sorry Derek mate, but it looks like you need more power.

I also got hold of a couple of Cobra Buckets in the right colour for £80. Much better...
Will have to clean up the half leather ones that came out and get them in the loft...

Are you running the wide ratio box and if so, what are the speed do you redline at in each gear? and what diff are you using.

How come it wont pull past 5800rpm no more grunt to give? ive built up a straight cut gearbox with clubman ratios and a 3.2 final drive so ill let you know how it handles i think
I drew up a chart and got these speeds in each gear
predicted speeds at 6500rpm (not the redline)
1st 45mph
2nd 68mph
3rd 93mph
4th 116mph
Should see 120 odd hopefully

Yeah! it was my own fault. I stupidly thought that the rear lights for the mk 2 were the same size and all I had to do was change the lenses. But that was an epic fail. so im on the look out for a complete set now...Project looks good mate. Bit confused about the mk2 rear lights. They should just fit straight in. Might need to do a little wiring but thats it. Its a simple job. I'v done it and I suck and electronics so much you cant even understand.

I fear that aerodynamics are my enemy. Its amazing how much more power you need to gain 10mph. But I never really had a long enough road to wait for it to top out. Im prety sure it will go faster. But to be honnest im more interested in acceleration than top speed. After all most 16 valve modern cars will blast past a mini once you get over 70 or 80 mph. But not much can keep up with me up to 70.

I see. Well the units arnt a lot of money. I'v only ever paid £10 for a set. Theirs normally a few sets around at auto jumbles.

Im impressed with your build, good to see people still doing engine builds at home!

Thanks... I learnt a lot by doing it myself. But the forum has been the biggest help.... I think the 16 valve minis are fab.... Went to Fintray hill climb this year and the noise from a 16V mini on full chat is simply awsome!!!ive tried to get a good balance of both acceleration and top speed with the 3.2 diff, and hopefully the 16v will help too.
