Hi everyone,

I have an Austin mini city E 998cc and I would like to make it a bit nippier.
I have been told I can advance the ignition timing but I have no idea how I do it ?
Could somebody tell me how this is done please and whether it is easy to do ?
I can proudly say I adjusted the tappets at the weekend (I'm a novice mechanic :( )

All help greatly appreciated

Many Thanks

Regards

Ian

Have you got a timing light with the advance feature on.

Ideally this is what you need.

You set the revs to approx 4000 rpm. then using the timing light set the timing to around 32 - 34 degrees BTDC
The timing marks are on the crank pulley left side of the engine.

This is done by slackening the clamp on the dizzy and turning the dizzy clockwise.

Then you need to test run the car, run it up a hill in to high a gear and listen for pinking, the engine will basically have a knocking noise and not sound right.
If it sounds healthy then leave it, if its not right, then go back and adjust the timing with the gun to around 30 - 32 degree. (turn dizzy anticlockwise)

test drive again..keep retarding the timing in 2 degree increments untill it sounds healthy with no pinking.

turning dizzy clockwise advances timing, anticlockwise retards it.

because the dizzy will have been tuned for a safe factory timing curve, you will probably find that tuning for max power at higher revs will give an unstable or higher tickover. only way round that is splash out on mapable ignition system or spends time retuning the dizzy with different springs and weights.

try googling for tuning A series, or lucas distributor

shoult not be done willy nilly if you dont know what you are doing. best to get the timing set with a strobe light. are you points or electronic. if points you would be better off with static adjustment. to advance the timing on an electronic dizzy check the arrow on the dizzy for direction of rotation and turn the opposite way to advance. cant stress enuf that this should not be done if you dont know whats going on with timming. my advise is get it done at the garage or by someone in your club who knows. you can realy do some damage withto much advance.

I'll 2nd the above warning..should have really put that in my post.

If you run to much advance you stand a chance of melting pistons, blowing head gaskets .

To be honest I tried my 998 with more advance can't really say I noticed any improvement.
