Hi everyone,
Just a quick question about primer.. I took certain panels of my mini down to bare metal, and then applied some MS Primer. Should i have used etch primer first and then used the ms primer over that? I dont know if ive made a big mistake by not using the etch primer on the bare metal?
All advice is much appreciated!
thanks

Yes you should have etched any bare metal areas.
I have primed without etch before but it should be a very light dust coat, if you hit it with a full coat to begin with, it doesn't adhere well at all.

Ah sh*t... this is my first time rebuilding a car. Wasnt planning on taking it down to bare metal in the first place, but my dad insisted we did it to get some of the lines back.... do think im gana have trouble with painting? or do you think i can possibly get away with it?

Dont worry, only aluminium absolutely has to be etched, steel doesnt matter.

As Paul says, it's not essential on steel. I've only etch primed something once in the past 25 years and have never had problems.

I etch prime everything I paint, mainly because it saves having more than one primer around... but yes on ali' it's an absolute must...
