I have found where my leak is now, its coming from the bottom of the windscreen seal (where the join is).

Is it hard to replace this seal? and will i need any special tool ? or is it just easier to get a garage to do it ?

Thanks again

You'll need a peace of cord, some washing up liquid and a mate to push the screen into the rubber for you.

Put rubber around the screen, bit of washing up liquid should help it on easier (but not to much else it'll move and slip around)
Insert cord into other side of the rubber
Then press screen into place
while your mates pressing said screen into place
start pealing the cord out from inside so the rubber laps over holding it into place

If you are not to sure on doing this your self. A garage shouldn't charge you to much to do it for you.

Fairly straightforward job. MUCH easier with the tool to put the filler strip back in. Whole job can be done in under an hour. Do it quickly or you may find the top of the scuttle/bulkhead/top dash rail rusted.

The MPI had a wider/bigger seal to make it more leak proof, maybe worth using one of those.

I was about to ask what mini13 has just said.

Im rebuilding at the moment and need to purchase a new windscreen rubber, is it worth buying the the wide one over the normal one?

The wider seals did a good job of holding more water against the metalwork, when was the last time you saw an Mpi with it's original scuttle panel? Stick with a new narrow one and seal it up properly to keep the water away.

Hi,
I read somewhere that the windscreen glass is thicker and heavier in the MPI. Is the MPI seal still compatible with all other windscreens?

I think the thicker later rubbers only hold the later laminated glass and not the earlier (thinner) tempered glass.

Did you find the FAQ here?

If any of that is unclear, feel free to ask. Having replaced glass in several cars (Mini and non-Mini) I can say there are some where the string method suggested by Timify works well. However, with the Mini, fit the rubber to the body opening, then use a plastic tool to pry the seal over the glass instead as detailed in the FAQ.

Since the FAQ was written someone suggested to me that K-Y Jelly of a similar personal lubricant works well on fitting the locking strip. Since that suggestion I've tried it in a couple of installations and it does work nicely.

Do buy or make the fillet installation tool. Putting the lock strip in without one is a difficult task. Most Mini suppliers should have the tool. They are also on eBay and you can make your own from a coat hanger if you copy the basic shape you'll see in pictures of the tool.

Still on the note of windscreen's. My 1986 city, would that have had the laminated glass and or the tempered glass, and also the narrow or wide seal. Need to order the bits up, but i don't have access to the original screen at the moment.

Cheers

It would have had the 'Secursiv' branded non-tinted laminated glass and the narrow seal as standard.

(I know because I had a late 1985 Mini Mayfair and that had the same only being a Mayfair meant the glass was tinted).
