what you want is a 1.2 3 cylinder tdi engine from a polo bluemotion or seat ibiza ecomotive, 75bhp but bags of tourqe and its got 6 gears and will do 125 :P Oh and not forgetting 80mpg too :P would be closer to 100mpg in a mini

Although these figures are partly thanks to how the polo and ibiza are built, with aerodynamics to help. A mini would not get any where near those figures

Has anyone seen the 3 cylinder turbo diesels used in the VW Polo, or the Hyundai Getz/Kia Picanto?

I am finding it impossible to get a picture, far less dimensions, of either, but am thinking that if they are short enough they may fit without modifying the monocoque.

The VW seems to be the more sophisticated of the two, but both have power in the Mini Cooper range, and the possibility of about 80mpg.

get a 1.7 izusu diesel out of a vauxhall. FMIC, bigger turbo, turn the boost and fuel pressure up and have a lot and i mean ALOT of fun, added black smoke is a side effect tho ;)

i know its not a mini, but when i get a rwd ford, im going to look at doing a sierra/p100 diesel conversion with the above mods done to the engine

I had a 1.4 deisel Metro.... top speed 95mph....down hill....with a tail wind. That would obviously fit in a mini.

Actually, I don't think it does fit easily. The Metro subframe is much wider, and there is more space between the wings too. Not worth the bother anyway, some modern engines will do much better.

I am hoping to get some pictures of a VW Polo 3 cylinder diesel soon, having found someone who owns one at last. That seems to be one of the more promising possibilities.

I have only recently bought a mini and have wondered if it would be possible to put a 1.3 vauxhall corsa diesel engine in it. sounds like it could be alot of hard work but maybe one day ... :)

1.3 cdti engine is quite nippy but im not sure what physical size the engine/box is.

we had 1.7 cdti ones at work but im not sure if the engine is physically bigger than a 1.3 cdti?

I'm no expert at all but from looking into it and apparently the 1.3 cdti using a multijet system whereas the 1.7 cdti uses a system called circle L which seems to imply that the 1.7 would have a bigger block I would assume that the 1.3 would be lighter and nippier. feel free to correct this assumption

My partner has a astra 1.3 cdti, its a very torquey engine. Seems to be around 75 horses. It would be my choice, if it fits/not too complicated wiring Although the price of the engine seems to be around 1200 on the bay!!

I'm not sure what the point would be, diesels do low down torque very well but run out of puff @ higher rpm. My micra conversion has enough low down torque to spin the wheels and pull 5th gear from 40km/hr up a hill, much more torque is wasted in my opinion, what are you practically going to use it for?
The good thing about the micra and others (especially small high rpm engines) is that there's almost the same rpm again above your just pootling around shift point for when you want to open it up for some spirited driving.
I have a 2.1 turbo diesel in my Sprinter and it's an amazing engine but I'm not sure that sort of engine would be all that much use in a light mini unless your a fry my tyres in any gear type in which case you'd probably be just as well served by a vtec with the top end as an added bonus.
Just thoughts... Not pretending to know about this.
