Fuel consumption would be worse

If its a standard 1275 with very minor mods, then you will hardly see any difference in performance (will sound nicer though :))

Basically the 40 and 45 webers are used on highly tuned 1275 engines, and engines with higher displacements (1380 etc.). SU carbs are more practical for the road, webers are higher performance on highly tuned engines (racing for instance).

If you want a road going weber, get a 32/34 DMTL kit like mine. It's designed for a 1275, and its fuel economy is even greater than an SU until you open the second venturi! It's a nice downdraft carb with two barrels. Sounds lovely too :)

Don't ask me where to get one, i don't know!

righto.. was asking about fuel consumption as there was a pug 205 locally who had an Mi16 engine on twin 40's and that had a proper drinking problem.. lol

so you reckon 32/34's are the way to go on road going 1275 minis.

in vizards book, he says that an s.u. is equal to or better than a weber up until about 100bhp, so unless you've a highly tuned engine, theres not much need really. but they do sound great, even if they have a bit of a drink problem!

Yeah, vizard is referring to the DCOE 45 and 40s right?

That's why I suggested the 32/34. It apparently is quite good on consumption, yet still has the amazing sound, and I'm sure its not hurting power either :)

It was a carb that was originally fitted to a Ford Fiesta SuperSport 1300 as far as I remember..

Aaah, the bible...

This is true, a single 1 3/4" SU can be as good as a Weber, to a point. If you are running a tuned motor, then a Weber is the better option, even on small bore.

But, a Weber can be good on fuel if its set up right. If an engine requires 'X' amount of fuel throughout the rev range, it doesnt matter whether you run a Weber or an SU because they can both give the same amount of fuel throught once its been rolling roaded and set up properly. All cars need to be below a certain emision amount for MOT's, so a good tuning session will make it worth while.

Hey thats what I was about to say. Yes Its a load of Bo*****s about Webers being heavy on fuel. They can be but that is because of the sound they make, it just makes you want to rev it.

I think the downdraft weber you need is the old 18/36 DCD (IIRC) as fitted to Mk1 cortinas, the problem with the fiesta carbs is you cannot get jets for them. Ford piad weber to make a carb just for that particular engine.

A 40 DCOE on a 1275 would be fine. bEAR IN MIND THAT FOR THE BEST YOU NEED A LONG INLET MANIFOLD AND TO FIT THAT YOU HAVE TO MOVE A CENTRE SPEEDO (IF THATS WHAT YOURS HAS) and build in a box for the carb to clear the bulkhead.

Personally I dont think that you need a weber (great carbs) just fit a single SU.

Siggy
