This thread is pathetic. The stick-on plates on the bonnet have been illegal since before the Mini was introduced, and at one time prosecutions were frequent. I know of at least one police force who are prosecuting people if their number plates are dirty, so how would you stand if stopped by them? Why do so many people here insist on breaking the law?

If that's the case tiger, how did Mazda and TVR get away with selling new cars with them fitted as I am pretty sure the the MX5 was introduced after the mini ;)

was what I was referring to, but MX5's actually had them on the front bumper/nose cone ;) TVR's however (although I could see them selling a car that wasn't 100% legal :P)

I got stopped on or about 1968/9- the policeman said is was not legal, if I didn't get a vertical plate I would be nicked.

Interestingly it says all plate replaced after 2001 must be bsau145d. So even if you have a pre1973 car, when you replace the plates they must. Be the new ones?

Also, if I were to mount the front plate to a monte carlo style roof rack would this be legal?

Actually I've just refitted the 'legal' one... I'm going to the continent this weekend and don't want any nasty surprises ;D

Never had a problem with having the bonnet one only but I'm aware I'm risking it!
