It's not the base of the carburettor touching the bulkhead anywhere is it? I've had speedo cables make a tappety noise in the past, has anyone else had a look at it, such as a qualified mechanic?

I've got to say if this wasn't an MPI i would say that is a classic case of pinking seems to be doing it under load, just like cooperman has said...hmm when my old 998 used to pink it sounded just like the tappets needed their clearances sorted.

Not yet, I was going to try and get it down for someone to have a look tomorow.

Because I don't bring the car into work a lot its hard to get it to my mechanic on the east coast of edinburgh.

As for the pinking, I did not think this was possible on an MPi due to the ECU taking control over everything.

I suppose an MPI could pink too if the sensors were sending wrong info to the ECU. I also wouldn't jump to a conclusion it is a bigend it could equally be something less severe that would be worth investigating first.

This could be gearbox related? Is it like a gear rattle? Does it happen in all the gears? Does it happen on overrun (when you change down)? My SPI made a bad gear rattle until I rebuilt the gearbox, I gave it a full rebuild so was never quite sure what is was but I think it was the layshaft and layshaft bearings.

I did have the rockers set to 16 thou. I will reset them back to this tonight

Yeah the rattle happens in all gears

I am off to see my mechanic today to see if he can shed his wisdom on this

ahh the rockers new or second hand? if second hand did you check the condition of the bushes and the rocker shaft, if itis worn you will get slack and an incorrect tappet gap with use.

they are second hand, but had only covered a few thousand miles.

I have had them fitted to the car for around 7 months and there was no issues up untill 2-3 weeks ago

went to see my mechanic yesterday.

he said it does not sound like the Big Ends ....phew

but he did say its very noisey, lots of top end noise.

I decided to take the 1.5.1 rockers off last night and revert back to the standard rover rockers.

I took a few of the push rods out in turn to make sure they were ok. when i done so, the cam follower was sticking to the bittom of the push rod. I had to wiggle the rod to get it to drop off..

Is this normal :)

After fitting the standard rockers its still noisy

hmm yeah that is normal, it could be badly worn cam followers they can make a noise and a half when worn, what did the end of the push rods look like?

I don't think it only happening under load suggests the valve gear (save maybe the chain) as they shouldn't work any harder.Big ends are quite distinctive and very predictable so I think you can trust the mechanic if he's encountered them before. How about an exhaust manifold leak?

Push rods looked good, covered in thick oil  They did have shiney bottoms

Yeah I trust him loads, he rebuilt my engine and fitted the new cam, duplex chain and rebuilt the gearbox.
