The groove is there to hold the protective rubber boot on when you pull it all together, it is not a seat for a circlip, although it does look that way in my pictures!

Yep - looks like it should just pull out but it is stuck so fast with no movement I feel there must be something I am missing! If I hit it any harder I will damage it....

It will come out with work, if it is really so stuck that damage to the cable is likely, then a junior hacksaw cut into the caliper to the cable (take care when near the cable itself) will help free it off, take a look at the new caliper you will see that how the cable sits into the hole.

And I am guessing that the OP has had to pay a surcharge on the calliper, which will be lost if the calliper is damaged :(

Penetrating oil and keep on spraying each day for a week.

I'd take a look at your new calliper, it might shine some new light on how the cable is held in place and from which side :mrcool:.
