Hi everyone.
My minus project is finally making some progress!
Anyway, it got me thinking......
I bought the shell on its own with no v5? (paperwork). It doesn't have a chassis number on it or anything. The donor car I am using does have all the paperwork however.
What are the legalities on getting this on the road? Do I just tell insurers it is a modification i.e. fibreglass body? or do I have to have it registered as a kit car?
Please help, I'm confused here!
Also, if it is a kit car what happens regarding milegae? If i want to use a second hand speedo showing 80,000 miles do you have to record that as the mileage on the registration docs? Technically it will be a new car with 0 miles?
Thanks
Russ

I would register it as the car you have used as donor (hopefully a pre-73 with free tax!) - it's basically just a 're-shell' job. Otherwise you will get a Q reg!! Get the car taxed and on the road before messing with DVLA - they have a nasty habit of hanging on to the V5 if you send it in to have any changes recorded.

Just reading this:

Seems to me (like you mention Ecosse) I might be able register it from its donor vehicle, and they will then give me a new number plate based on a similar age? Why can't I just used the donor vehicle plate?
My donor car is 84. I might just buy a scrapper pre tax bracket car just for the paperwork to free road tax
. Surely a loop hole is different to illegal?

Obviously it is better to get free tax........... But - don't do anything illegal! Can't see why you wouldn't use the existing reg number of the donor car - unless it's reg plate was sold off as a Private Reg ?

haha I don't want to do anything illegal.
What I meant was; say I buy a pre 73 mini. Surely I could say I used that as the donor instead of my 84 car?

once it's been registered as a kit car and gone through an IVA test i don't think you will keep your tax exempt status anyway

Yes - if you use a pre 73 Mini as the donor, and re-shell it with the Minus shell (which should really be NEW, and never been on the road before!) then it will just BE that pre 73 Mini. Don't get into hassle with DVLA until the car is MOTd and tavxed and on the road. Only then tell them about any engine swap (be prepared for hassle if a capacity change is involved) and if you want to change the body type to 'Minus'. I would be tempted to leave it all well alone until the car has some miles on the clock - and even then............ You certainly don't want to be going through any IVA test!! Be sure to use a nice 'friendly' MOT garage who won't report the car back to DVLA as having had major modifications!!!!!!

This sounds like its going to be a pain......
Just out of interest, why is the kit car test so dreaded?
Also, why are Q plates a bad thing?
Cheers

There are a few threads on the IVA; one,in my name, is pinned in Mini chat.
You can use any combination of new & old bits, as long as you build something that can pass the test, but if the points don't add up you'll get a Q plate. - it's explained in the topic.
There's nothing up with a Q plate in principle, it could even give you an easier MoT, but you may find some insurers won't want to quote. Also, insurers and buyers may regard the car as less valuable. But then, the fact it's a non-standard plastic Mini would count out many policies and make book values irrelevent.
