hi, i visited my local spayer and he quoted me £200 for a full spray job aslong as i do the prep. i have started by removing the bonnet and boot and prep them off the car. i have done all my sanding and done a few coats of primer from a spray can.

is spray can primer suitable for priming the car? if yes, what is the best brand and if not what primer should i use? i can get hold of a compressor and a spray gun.

thanks all!!

we use aerosol primer at work (bodyshop) on small areas but for priming a whole car best bet is 2k primer and a spray gun. well thats what ive been taught.

well im not 100% on this as im still an aprentice, but at work we use upol highbuild primer, not sure on the price but it does the job. and in regard to sandpaper, i think wet flatting with p320 is a good enough finish for paint but im sure you can find a better guide to flatting paper on here in the bodywork section as like i said im still learning and im sure theres lots of people on here who know the subject better.

i honestly dont know how many cans you would need but to be on the safe side probs about a litre of high build primer and half a litre of etch primer, ( that is a safe guess so if anyone has a better idea feel free to share  )

Hi mate. We've just sprayed our mini but prepped it with spray can primer. Will check the make of it when I get in because it's really good to use and has a very good spray radius and finish, didn't even have to flat it back after. We used about 12 cans in the end at 2 quid a can because Iv got a trade card, forget paying a tenner a can. We used 400 grade wet/dry to key the paint before spraying it on too. Hope this helps

etch primer is acid etch, lol. 2k is tonnes better than cellulose.

cellulose is air drying, so the chances of reactions, etc due to humidity levels or temperature, etc is far greater.

2k is a chemical reaction, so the paint doesnt dry, it hardens, and theres less chance of reactions due to atmospheric conditions

most would use 2k, although 2k is seriously dodgy stuff that you dont want to be breathing in, so if you do spray it, make sure you have all the right respiration gear!

im getting it sprayed by my local sprayer. would 2k need different primer from cellulose, vice versa?
