I was searching through some mini classifieds the other day, and came across 2 51 reg classic style coopers, but however, A few days later I found a picture of the last mini, and both the picture and the DVLA clearly state that this car was made in 2000 (X). The DVLA also says that at least one of the coopers (I can't see the other's number plate in the photos) was made in 2001 (51). How did this happen?

X411 JOP could well be the last built, but not necesarily the last registered.

How did this happen?

It didn't. The Mini line shut down in 2000 after X411 JOP rolled along it. All the line employees downed tools after tightening the last bolts and followed it along the line so there is no way another Mini came along that line. The DVLA doesn't keep records of when cars were built, only when they were registered. Rover had hundreds of unsold Minis at the end of production and dealerships kept selling them. They were registered when they were sold. As long as the cars still comply with the current regulations that apply to year of registration they can be registered (some regulations apply by year of construction). There are hundreds of 51 and later Minis out there which were all registered late after sitting in a dealer lot for a couple of years. 'Declared new at first registration' just means it's never been registered before in another country or under another registration system, it doesn't mean its brand new.

Thanks for clearing that up, Dan and GW. Still it would be nice to own a 51 reg or later registered mini :D
Just never seen another 51 reg mini, or later.
But, just out of wonder, why do the dvla have a 'year of manufacture' field on their database if it's wrong?

It's not always wrong. It's just that there hasn't always been a requirement to declare that information on the appication form so not all cars have it recorded accurately, and if they have no info DVLA will assume it's the year it was registered. Cars applying for historic status will have to prove their date of manufacture and so sometimes it will be correct but often it's not. There's no record of the year of manufacture on the V5c.

It's also possible to build your own new Mini if you use all new parts, like Wood & Pickett did with the Margrave 50 - not sure what you'd call it on the V5.

IIRC, there was an '07' reg R1 powered Mini in Mini World a while back. He'd done exactly that.

He had a project thread on here if it's the same one.

Ive seen a 55 plate MPI. A lot of people brought them and stored them for a few years before registering them at a later date.

wernt a few build by a company for mini 50 and registered on 59 plates? Which would make these the last mini's built.

X411JOP is the last mini ever built at the factory. Which is where the difference lies.

If the guy that won the 20 year old 'brand new' Mini 30, at Uttoxeter last year, registered it as soon as he'd won it, it would be a 59 reg

Some believe and have said that X411 JOP wasn't the actual final Mini to come off the line, because it was removed from the line to get ready for the TV and news reporters while the line was still running.

I don't know if that is true, but it was on the TV news that day: -
